The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Friday that Rajon Rondo will be sidelined for the next two weeks after suffering a toe sprain.

Rondo has put up 7.5 points and 5.0 assists per game in 14 appearances. The two-time champ has brought a veteran presence to a young Cavs team that has shot up the Eastern Conference playoff standings. His injury further depletes a Cavs backcourt that is missing Collin Sexton and Caris LeVert due to injury. Darius Garland is also day-to-day with a back injury.

The Cavs (35-24) have 23 games remaining on their schedule, including a matchup with the Wizards coming on Saturday.

According to League insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers have agreed to trade Denzel Valentine to the Lakers for two-time champion Rajon Rondo.

The Cavs made the trade, hoping Rondo can replace the lost production of Ricky Rubio, who is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL on Tuesday against the Pelicans. Rondo is reportedly eager for a chance to play a more significant role on the resurgent Cavaliers in the absence of Rubio. The two-time champion has reportedly been positive on the deal since the Lakers notified him of the option Thursday.

This is Rondo’s 16th season, and he’s currently averaging 3.1 points and 3.7 assists per game for the Lakers during his 16th season in the League. Since Sunday, he has been in health and safety protocols and will need to clear protocols before he joins the Cavs (20-14). The Cavs are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference.

The Lakers are expected to waive Valentine and create an open roster spot. Valentine has averaged 2.9 points over just 9.3 minutes per game for the Cavs this season after signing a two-year deal in September.

The 2008 Boston Celtics were a legendary basketball team that won a championship and cemented the legacies of several players.

The only player left in the NBA from that team is Los Angeles Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo.

When speaking with Kyle Goon of the Orange County Register, Rondo opened up about his experience on that Celtics championship team and talked about being the only player left from the roster.

“It’s life. I’m on my last leg here in the League. I think I got another six years, but other than that,” Rondo joked.

Rondo also talked with Goon about how his stint with the Celtics was a great period of his NBA career and mentioned how great it has been playing for their rival.

“It’s been an amazing journey in my career,” Rondo said. “To start in Boston, nine years, this is kind of place that raised me and possibly ending my career with the rival, but for me, like there’s been a great journey, a great story and fans have been amazing in both places.”

Led by Rondo, Kevin GarnettPaul Pierce, and Ray Allen, the 2008 Celtics took down a Lakers team led by Kobe Bryant in six games.

Rondo has put together a solid career for himself, being named to four All-Star teams, four All-Defensive teams, one All-NBA team, and won a second NBA Championship in 2020 with the Lakers.

Still contributing in his 16th season in the NBA, Rondo provides valuable minutes to a Lakers team looking for its second championship in three years. Rondo is averaging 15.3 minutes, 3.3 points, and 3.8 assists per game this season.

While it was believed by many that Rondo’s stay with the Memphis Grizzlies would be short after the team acquired him in a trade on Aug. 16 in a package to send Eric Bledsoe to the Los Angeles Clippers. Rondo’s brief tenure lasted less than two weeks as the Grizzlies announced on Saturday that they waived him.

The two-time NBA champion has now reportedly signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Rondo “plans” on signing a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the team. Sources claim that he will sign the contract on Tuesday.

Rondo has played two seasons in LA previously and was a member of the 2020 NBA championship team. He averaged 8.9 points per game and shot 40 percent from distance in the bubble during the title run.

This news come shortly after a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania, who tweeted over the weekend that after Rondo cleared waivers on Monday, he was expected to sign with the Lakers.

In his 15th NBA season, Rondo played 45 games between the Hawks and the Clippers, where he averaged only 5.4 points per game. Despite his struggles, Rajon shot a career high 40.4 percent from three-point range.

Rondo will likely be deep on the team’s depth chart at point guard, playing behind LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Kendrick Nunn.

After being traded earlier this month to the Memphis Grizzlies, it’s still unclear what Rajon Rondo’s future is with the team. Although they’re going to be a solid playoff team, there’s still a chance he’s traded away or even bought out.

In recent segment on ESPN Radio, Ramona Shelburne reported that Rondo is a strong candidate to join the Los Angeles Lakers if the Grizzlies were to buy him out.

At 35 years old, Rondo is a veteran guard who could make a real impact in the postseason for a contender. It makes sense that the Lakers have interest in him as he was excellent for them on their 2020 NBA Finals run.

During that championship push with Los Angeles, Rondo averaged 8.9 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per contest.

They already have a stacked roster heading into the 2021-22 season, but the Lakers would certainly get better if they were able to add Rondo.

Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Sam Amick, the Atlanta Hawks have acquired guard Lou Williams, two second-round draft picks and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for point guard Rajon Rondo.

Williams, a three-time Sixth Man of the Year, has averaged 12.1 points and 3.4 assists per game this season, shooting .378 percent from 3-point range. With the Hawks’ trouble generating consistent offense from the perimeter without Young, Williams helps alleviate responsibilities while improving the productivity of the second unit offense.

The Clippers are also sure to be thrilled with their addition, as the Rondo is a two-time champion praised for his leadership, intelligence, experience and toughness. Rondo has averaged career-lows of 3.9 points and 3.5 assists per game this season, shooting .400 percent from the field and .378 percent from 3-point range.

Rondo averaged 7.1 points and 5.0 assists per game during the regular season with Los Angeles but came alive in the postseason as he has a tendency to do.

Rondo will back up Trae Young in Atlanta, serving in the role of battle-tested veteran for a franchise eager to take its rebuild to the next level.

Rondo will join Kris Dunn, who agreed to sign with the Hawks earlier today after not having a qualifying offer extended his way by the Bulls.

The Los Angeles Lakers could be without Rajon Rondo next season as the veteran guard, fresh off an excellent postseason, has decided to hit free agency.

Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times reports that Rondo will not exercise his player option worth $2.7 million.

After playing a vital supporting role on a Lakers team that won the 2020 title, Rondo figures to have suitors. While this offseason’s market is limited, there are multiple pathways for Rondo to ink a deal worth more than the minimum pact he signed last offseason.

Rondo signed a two-year, $5.2 million deal and proceeded to averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 assists per game for the Lakers in the playoffs. Rondo has established chemistry with Anthony Davis and it showed in the bubble.

That being said, at 34 years of age, Rondo’s window to ink a relatively substantial contract is closing, so capitalizing on the momentum he gathered in the bubble could be a wise move.

Among Rondo’s suitors, Turner tweets, are the Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers.

Now, he will have the opportunity to test free agency, where he should have a variety of suitors. Although he does have a player option for the 2020-21 season worth roughly $2.7 million, Rondo recently said he was definitely going to entertain the idea of opting out and entering free agency on ESPN’s First Take.

“I’m definitely going to entertain it. Obviously, always thinking about running it back with a great group of guys and coaching staff. I can’t thank those guys enough for giving me a shot in the last couple of years. It’s been amazing playing for this organization. My agent and I will sit down and talk, but right now, I’m just kind of enjoying the moment, continuing to ride this high out.”

One team that has already been reported by Marc Stein of the New York Times to have interest in the veteran point guard is the Los Angeles Clippers, who are coming off of a disappointing 2019-20 season. Playmaking and point guard depth is something that certainly held them back during their short postseason run.

Of course, as Rondo has said, he thinks about the idea of running it back with the Lakers and going for another championship. According to Stein, the Lakers have a mutual interest in bringing Rondo back. This makes a ton of sense for the Lakers, as he was arguably their third-best player in the playoffs.

Through 16 games, Rondo produced 8.9 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game on .400 from beyond the arc in the playoffs. This included a pivotal 21-point, nine-assist game again the Houston Rockets in the second round.

At 34 years old, Rajon Rondo can still provide plenty of value to NBA teams, especially contenders like the Lakers and Clippers.

The Lakers are a completely different team this season than they were in LeBron James‘ first year in Los Angeles. Last season, James missed 27 games, and the team went 37-45 and missed the playoffs.

The team was very young, with guys like Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart shouldering a heavy load. James was a clear leader and was a huge influence on the young players on the team, whether good or bad.

Rajon Rondo spoke to ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan about his challenge to LeBron this season to focus on his body language. Rondo reflected on how James’ teammates looked up to him last season:

“When guys are making the same mistakes over and over and over, it’s hard to bite your tongue but I tried to get [James] to focus on his body language…Those young guys were looking at everything he did. If they missed four shots in a row and LeBron was making a face, it was crushing to them. He was their Michael Jordan. They didn’t want to let him down. But if LeBron said one thing positive to Brandon Ingram or Kyle Kuzma, they immediately were back to their old selves.”

Whether James knew it or not, everything he did had an impact on the other members of the team. As a leader and mentor, his body language sometimes made a negative impact on his teammates.

Although many of those teammates were traded away in the Anthony Davis deal, Rondo wanted James to focus on this in the 2019-20 season.

Not only has Rondo had some exceptional games on the Lakers’ current playoff run, but it goes to show all of the little things he has done for the team off the floor this season. As a veteran, and someone James trusts, Rondo found ways to challenge his teammates to make them better in the long run.

After the Lakers huge Game 5 victory over the Nuggets, they are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010. After the game, Anthony Davis talked about how Rajon Rondo was one of the first people he called once he was traded to the Lakers.

“When I got traded here, he was actually the first person I called. I told him I wanted him to come back. I knew how much I excelled with him and how much of a leader he is and his mindset on the floor and his will to win. To have a guy like that with a basketball mind and his IQ…he knows what it takes. Me and him just click.”

Davis has had high praise for Rondo for much of the 2020 NBA Playoffs, recently talking about how ‘Playoff Rondo’ is real. Davis and Rondo played together in New Orleans for a season and meshed extremely well. Now, both members of the Lakers, they are headed to the 2020 NBA Finals together.

AD has stuffed the stat sheets thus far in the postseason, putting up 28.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest. While Rondo doesn’t necessarily blow you away in the box score, his leadership and IQ are things that the Lakers have benefited from.

The term ‘Playoff Rondo’ has been used for over a decade now. Ever since his breakout postseason performance for the Boston Celtics in their 2008 NBA Championship run, Rajon Rondo has seemed to play better as the stage gets bigger.

The stats tell the whole story, as Rondo’s numbers are better in the playoffs than in the regular season. His career 10.2 points, 8.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game in the regular season are solid for any point guard. However, in the playoffs his career numbers are elevated to 14.0 points, 9.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds per contest.

His teammates fully believe that ‘Playoff Rondo’ is real. After Rondo’s recent 21-point, nine-assist performance, Anthony Davis gave his thoughts on the nickname.

“I experienced it firsthand. It’s real. Playoff Rondo is real. The intensity picks up … his IQ is on another level. Playoff Rondo is real and he showed up tonight.”

Davis was Rondo’s teammate with the New Orleans Pelicans back in 2017-18 when he averaged a playoff career-high 12.2 assists per game. He continually finds ways to be great in the playoffs and help his teams win. Davis has now been a witness of Rondo’s playoff excellence on two separate teams.

LeBron James also had praise for his veteran point guard after Game 3 against the Houston Rockets.

“He’s been exceptional. These last two games have been everything we’ve imagined. Being on the opposing side for him so many years, I know what he’s capable of. It’s perfect.”

Since his return to the lineup, Rondo has looked like the third best player on the Lakers behind James and Davis. Although this may not be sustainable as the playoffs go on, Los Angeles can’t complain about how well Rajon Rondo has played recently.

The Los Angeles Lakers were dealt a significant blow on Sunday when it was revealed that veteran guard Rajon Rondo would miss six-to-eight weeks with a broken right thumb.

According to ESPN, the 34-year-old will undergo surgery to repair a fracture, the third injury that he’s sustained on his right hand since signing with the team in 2018.

While Rondo’s 2019-20 role was the smallest of his 14-year-career, Rondo’s reputation as an elite postseason performer and the face that starting shooting guard Avery Bradley won’t be playing in the restart suggested that more could have been in store.

The six-to-eight-week timetable puts Rondo back in action anywhere between late August and mid-September. Given Los Angeles’ championship aspirations, it’s certainly possible that they’ll still be in contention when that time comes.

Rondo averaged 10.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 12.2 assists per game in his last taste of playoff action just two seasons ago.

Ray Allen says he faced death threats from Celtics fans angered by his decision to leave Boston for the hated Miami Heat as a free agent in 2012.

“You’re talking about nine years now and I’ve gotten so much hate,” added Allen, who reveals that he bolted due to “so many unresolved” locker room issues.

The Hall of Fame guard felt “removed” from Beantown’s “Big Three” by former teammates Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Per NBC Sports Boston:

“I left as a free agent,” Allen told [Cedric] Maxwell, via CLNS Media’s Josue Pavon. “I left because there were so many unresolved issues that the team wasn’t considering or willing to change.”

Allen turned down a two-year deal from the Celtics in 2012 to join LeBron James and the Heat, who had just defeated Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals.

“These guys kind of removed me from the ‘Big Three,’ said so many negative things about me and I haven’t had one negative thing to say about any of them,” Allen said. “We had tough times, we’re brothers. We went through a lot. But that doesn’t change anything that we’ve done. It hurt me over the course of this time just to hear some of the things that have been said.”

Former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said recently he hopes Allen will return to Boston for Garnett’s jersey retirement ceremony next season, noting that C’s fans would give the Hall of Fame guard a standing ovation.

“You’re talking about nine years now and I’ve gotten so much hate, death threats, vitriol from Boston fans,” Allen said. “As far as me being there, I think that is a subject that is really undecided yet. It would take Kevin and I to have a conversation moving forward.”

A flu-ridden Anthony Davis helped the Los Angeles Lakers earn a 105-96 road win Tuesday night against Denver, earning plaudits from his grateful teammates.

LeBron James called him the “defensive player of the year,” while Rajon Rondo added that Davis should also win MVP while he’s at it.

AD held Nuggets center Nikola Jokic to 13 points in the victory.

Per The LA Times:

“Hey sick man!” LeBron James hollered across the locker room. “You all right? Ready? You waiting for me?”

Even being sick is more fun coming off a win.

“He’s been doing it all year,” James said of Davis. “Playing through injuries, playing through illness like he did tonight. Defensive player of the year and he showed tonight once again playing one on one versus Joker in the post. When there were switches going on with Jamal Murray, playing one on one versus a small. Got stop after stop after stop. Just a monster game for him.”

As he came off the court during a timeout in the fourth quarter, Davis was crowing about his expectation that he would be first-team all-defense this year. His teammates respectfully disagreed.

“I got him as MVP and defensive player of the year,” Rondo said. “So, if he only gets one, I’ll be [angry]. My expectations are really high for him, so we have to continue to win as a team and hopefully the rest of the world will understand and see that he’s a really big part of why we are who we are.”

Doc Rivers believes the 2008 Boston Celtics would beat any of today’s teams—including his re-tooled LA Clippers—largely because of the “mental toughness of that group.”

Rivers argues that present-day teams aren’t nearly as deep as the C’s were back then.

Doc adds that the ’08 squad, which won a single championship but featured three Hall of Famers, will be ultimately vindicated by history.

Per Sports Illustrated:

“I think so, and it’s because of the mental toughness of that group,” said Rivers. “That was a very skilled, very deep team, and the depth made them so special.

“When you think of the Celtics, you think of ‘The Big Three’ [Paul Pierce, Garnett, and Allen], but that doesn’t include [Rajon] Rondo or Perk [Kendrick Perkins], who were both phenomenal players, or Eddie House, Tony Allen, James Posey, PJ Brown, Big Baby [Glen Davis], and Leon Powe. That was a deep basketball team. Teams aren’t as deep now. But I also believe that every team that’s won an NBA title can compete. Each team may be different, but there is a certain quality about championship teams that separate them from everyone else. Our 2008 group is another example of that.”

Rivers agreed that there is no 2020 basketball equivalent to Kevin Garnett.

“Kevin Garnett is the greatest superstar team-builder that I’ve seen in the history of the game,” said Rivers. “He always considered the team before any action that he took on or off the floor, and for that to also be your superstar player is unusual. Kevin Garnett, like Tom Brady, is a culture-builder. When you have a guy like that, you’re going to win. Kevin is one of the greatest of all-time, but he’d be the last one to tell you.

“He was in the right mental place to win in Boston, as were Paul and Ray. They’d already done so many other things in their careers, but the one thing that stood out was something they couldn’t buy, something they couldn’t do alone. In order to do this, they had to come together as a group. Kevin really understood that, and he was willing to sacrifice anything for that, including his numbers and his fame.”

DeMarcus Cousins is excited to join an “incredible” roster in Los Angeles.

Cousins, 28, inked a one-year, $3.5 million deal: he says the Lakers “look legit” on paper and should be NBA title contenders next season.

Boogie reports that his “quad is 100 percent healed,” and is especially thrilled to re-unite with Anthony Davis and join forces with fellow superstar LeBron James.

Per ESPN:

“That’s part of the reason why we wanted to become teammates again,” Cousins said of teaming up with Davis on a conference call with Lakers media Wednesday. “We realized how much better we made one another and how much we made the game easier for each other. We both appreciate each other’s presence.

“To add LeBron James to the mix, his résumé speaks for itself. One of the greatest players ever to play the game, added to that, it should be an exciting season.”

With the Lakers surrounding James and Davis with the likes of Kyle Kuzma, Danny Green, Avery Bradley, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, JaVale McGee, [Rajon] Rondo, Quinn Cook and Jared Dudley, Cousins sees a powerful squad.

“The roster is incredible,” said Cousins, who could start at center with Davis at power forward. “I think we got a lot of talented pieces on paper. On paper we look legit, we look like we have a great chance of competing for a title. It’s obvious that the game isn’t played on paper. It’s our job to come together and mesh and get on the same page and build a chemistry and go out and win games. As far as on paper, we look great.”

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a two-year deal with Rajon Rondo, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Rondo will round out a roster that includes LeBron James, Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins.

Rondo played last season on a $9 million deal with Los Angeles but now claims his spot in the team’s new-look rotation. The 33-year-old averaged 9.2 points and 8.0 assists for the Lakers and is familiar with the team’s incoming twin towers.

Rondo played with Cousins and Davis during the team’s 2017-18 campaign.

Given that Rondo stands as the lone pure point guard on L.A.’s roster, it’s likely that he gets the starting nod, further establishing one of the most star-studded squads in the NBA.

The addition of Rondo gives a total of 12 players, ESPN’s Bobby Marks points out. They had six prior to the Kawhi Leonard commitment last night.

Rajon Rondo hit a mid-range jumper to beat the Boston Celtics at the buzzer Thursday night, giving the Los Angeles Lakers a thrilling 129-128 road win.

LeBron James led the way for the visitors with a triple-double of 28 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.

The C’s, however, took solace in the fact that Anthony Davis didn’t up in a Purple and Gold jersey at Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

Per ESPN:

“A storybook ending,” LeBron declared.

It was a thrilling finish to an otherwise crushing day for Lakers fans, who hoped for Davis to don their uniform by the weekend. In one of the most active deadline days ever, a multitude of trades impacted contending teams such as Milwaukee, Toronto and Philadelphia. Yet all eyes remained fixed on two storied franchises that ultimately … did nothing.

[Kyrie] Irving was asked by ESPN what he made of the fact that neither the Lakers nor the Celtics made a significant transaction at the deadline, yet continued to dominate the narrative because of their pursuit of Davis.

“It’s the nature of the business,” Irving shrugged. “It’s been like this for a while.”

Raptors 119 (40-16), Hawks 101 (18-36)

Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet combined for 63 points to carry the load while Kawhi Leonard had the night off.

The Hawks led by eight at halftime, but they were only able to muster up 33 points in the second half as Toronto cruised to the W.

Lakers 129 (28-27), Celtics 128 (35-20)

Kyrie Irving got to the rack with 11.5 seconds to go for a go-ahead bucket and it looked like it was the nail in the coffin after Brandon Ingram was blocked with three seconds to go; however, the ball somehow bounced its way to Rajon Rondo, who got a shot off from the elbow with just 0.2 seconds to go.

LeBron James had a triple-double with 28 points, 12 rebounds, 12 dimes and three steals. Kyrie Irving had a team-high 24 points, eight assists and two steals for the Celtics.

Los Angeles shot a paltry 7-for-18 from the free throw line, but they hit a franchise-record 22 shots from behind the arc on 53.7 percent shooting to make up for it. Kuzma and James each hit five shots from deep.

The Lakers trailed by as many as 18 points in the second quarter before dropping 42 points in the third quarter to spark the comeback.

https://twitter.com/SLAMonline/status/1093694446380638208

Grizzlies 95 (22-34), Thunder 117 (35-19)

Russell Westbrook stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists and four steals and Paul George knocked down six 3’s en route to 27 points as the Thunder overcame a halftime deficit to blow out the Grizzlies.

Spurs 118 (32-25), Trail Blazers (33-21)

The Spurs made up a 21-point deficit when DeMar DeRozan made a jumper with two minutes to go in the third quarter to tie things up, but the Trail Blazers got back on track and made the next bucket and led the rest of the way.

DeRozan scored a game-high 35, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Portland’s trio of CJ McCollum (30 points), Damian Lillard (24) and Jusuf Nurkic (22) taking care of business on the offensive end.

Clippers 92 (30-26), Pacers 116 (36-19)

The Pacers scored 71 first half points as the Clippers struggled to score in their first game since moving Tobias Harris.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored a game-high 29 for Indiana on 12-for-19 shooting. Myles Turner was the Pacers’ defensive anchor with four steals and six blocks to go along with his 17 points.

Timberwolves 112 (25-29), Magic 122 (23-32)

Terrence Ross turned in his third 25-point outing in the Magic’s last four contests as he dropped 32 points off the bench to lead all scorers.

An offensive outburst in the game’s first three quarters — Orlando had 102 points entering the fourth — put the game to bed.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins combined for 50 points.

The Los Angeles Lakers are determined to trade for Anthony Davis before Thursday’s trade deadline, and their first offer for The Brow was leaked last night by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

An offer including only two out of the Lakers young core of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac must have been underwhelming for the Pelicans, who believed the offers were “lowball”, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

A good negotiator never extends his best offer early, and the Lakers two reported rivals in the Davis sweepstakes have taken a step back recently. The Knicks traded away their most valuable asset in Kristaps Porzingis on Thursday, while Anthony Davis Sr lambasted the way Boston treated former guard Isaiah Thomas in a text to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

“Boston…I would never want my son to play for Boston after what they done to Isaiah Thomas…NO LOYALTY…guy gives his heart and soul and they traded him…anyone can print that,” Davis Sr said.

Move over, Golden State: Kyle Kuzma says the Lakers—health-permitting—can roll out their own so-called “death lineup.”

Kuzma believes L.A.’s small ball unit, which has yet to hoop together due to injuries, “can be really good.”

Kuzma adds that LeBron James playing the center position is key to the group’s effectiveness.

Per the LA Times:

“I think our small ball unit can be really good,” Kuzma said. “I think we can have a death lineup whether that’s [Rajon] Rondo and Lonzo [Ball] on the floor at the same time and me and [Brandon Ingram] and [Le]Bron [James] or substituting guys. I think as we get better defensively and get more continuity, that small ball lineup is going to be huge for us, especially in the playoffs, when everybody’s going to be going small.”

Kuzma says the Lakers haven’t been able to try that lineup in practice yet.

He sees the lineup working best, though, with James as their small ball center.

“I mean I would hope he would be the five,” Kuzma said, smiling. “He’s a little bit bigger, little more muscle. Offensively doesn’t really matter. He’s going to have the ball. We have a pretty good pick and pop chemistry. It’s all about defensively how we guard our guys.”

The Los Angeles Lakers (21-19) have lost three in a row, but Kobe Bryant wants their rabid fanbase to “relax” and not overreact.

Bryant points out that three key players are currently out with injuries.

The Lakers are 1-5 without LeBron James, who will miss at least two more games with a strained groin.

Per the LA Times:

“It’s a significant stretch because it’s an opportunity for us, it’s an opportunity for young players to grow and establish themselves, with LeBron out, with Rondo out,” veteran center Tyson Chandler said. “It gives other guys an opportunity to step up so when those guys come back we can be in the rhythm, guys can be feeling good about what they’re doing out there. But we’ve got to take advantage of it.”

[Lance] Stephenson was asked if it feels like the Lakers are letting their overarching goals slip away.

“A little bit,” Stephenson said. “Right now is our down time. And I think we gonna go on a run. I think we gotta stay positive and confident in each other and this group that we got right now. No excuses and just play basketball, man. I think the guys just thinking too much; we just gotta play. Play like we normally play, and play without thinking.”

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without point guard Rajon Rondo for “3-5 weeks,” reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, after he broke his right hand in Wednesday night’s 126-117 victory against the visiting Portland Trail Blazers.

Rondo suffered the injury while making a steal in the fourth quarter.

The 32-year-old is averaging 8.5 points and 6.5 assists in 25.3 minutes for the Purple and Gold.

Per the AP:

There was bad news on a triumphant night, too: After the game, [head coach Luke] Walton revealed that Rajon Rondo broke his right hand, apparently while making a steal in the fourth quarter. The veteran point guard will be sidelined for at least a few weeks, and starter Lonzo Ball’s so-far moderate workload is likely to increase.

In the wake of the Lakers-Rockets brawl this past weekend, Rajon Rondo continues to deny that he intentionally spit on Chris Paul, causing the altercation to spiral out of control.

According to ESPN, in making its decisions on penalties, the NBA analyzed court-side footage that appeared to show Rondo spitting. He eventually got hit with a three-game suspension, with CP3 getting two games.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpNET5Ggmwq/?utm_source=ig_embed

Here’s what the L.A. point guard had to say about the incident on Tuesday, via ESPN:

“This is the only time I’m going to address this. I had a mouthpiece in my mouth and I was exasperated because I was about to tell him to ‘get the [expletive] out of here.’

“Look at my body language [in the video]. My hands on my hips. I turn away for a second. Look at Eric [Gordon] and Melo in the video. If they saw me spit, they would have turned their face up or something. They had no reaction.

“Of course, the NBA went with [Paul’s] side because I got three games and he got two. Everyone wants to believe Chris Paul is a good guy. They don’t know he’s a horrible teammate. They don’t know how he treats people. Look at what he did last year when he was in LA; trying to get to the Clippers locker room. They don’t want to believe he’s capable of taunting and igniting an incident.

” … He comes out and says I spit and the media sides with that.”

Rondo went on to say that he believes the evidence has been tampered with and the story twisted:

“Y’all are playing me with these tricks or these mind games, tampering with the evidence. Ain’t no way that I intentionally spit on you with my body language the way it was. One, if I spit on you, bottom line, there is not going to be no finger-pointing. If you felt that I just spit on you, then all bets are off. Two, look at my body language. If I spit on you on purpose, I’m going to be ready for a man to swing on me. You ain’t going to have my hands on my hip and my head look away at someone if I spit on them. After the [expletive] goes down, within 30 seconds, you run and tell the sideline reporters that I spit on you? If I spit on you, you are trying to get to me. You not trying to make up a story so you can look like a good guy. It makes no sense to me.

“I was going to let it rest. I wasn’t going to say much. But now I have kids and I teach my kids to speak up for themselves and don’t let the world tell their story.”

Glen “Big Baby” Davis, a former teammate of Rondo and CP3, chimed in as well:

Paul Pierce says he is “not surprised at all” that Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo threw punches Saturday night.

If anything, Pierce was shocked it took this long for a fight to breatk out between the two veteran point guards.

“I am not surprised at all,” Pierce said on the ESPN postgame show.

“Rondo and Chris Paul have never liked each other. This goes back to maybe Rondo’s rookie year or second year. I’m surprised that this is their first fight actually, because they have never got along.”

Paul, Rondo and Brandon Ingram were all suspended for their roles in the brouhaha.

Per ESPN:

The last major fight in the NBA was almost 12 years ago, when current Rockets forward Carmelo Anthony received a 15-game suspension while playing for the Denver Nuggets.

Anthony said that [NBA vice president Kiki] Vandeweghe should do “what is right” in his decision, and Rondo’s actions were “unacceptable.” Anthony said he saw Rondo spit in Paul’s face to spark the altercation.

“Chris had to retaliate,” Anthony said. “In that situation, the New York situation, you can’t let that fly.”

Houston Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni completely disagreed with the NBA handing Chris Paul a two-game suspension for his role in the fight that erupted Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Rajon Rondo (three games) and Brandon Ingram (four games) were also punished by the League.

D’Antoni says Paul had no choice but to react after being spat on by the Lakers’ point guard.

Per the Houston Chronicle:

“I don’t agree or anything close to it,” D’Antoni said of the NBA ruling. “It’s just not equitable. You watch the film, you watch the spit — you understand maybe he gets one (-game suspension). But what is he supposed to do? Stand there and get spit on? Take a punch in the face and then, ‘That’s OK?’”

Asked if he had ever seen Paul so angry, D’Antoni said: “I’ve never really seen him spit on before. That changes the equation. Yeah, I get it. It’s pretty disgusting, actually.”

The suspension will cost Paul $491,782, Rondo $186,207 and Ingram $200,428 in salary, a disparity attributable to Paul’s much richer contract. That led to D’Antoni’s argument that the penalties were unfair, given Paul’s role responding to Rondo’s initial action.

“He was straight up with us,” D’Antoni’ said. “He was apologetic. He apologized to the team. But in the heat of the moment, somebody does that, that’s tough. I mean, that’s really tough. I don’t know what they expect him to do. You talk monetarily, he’s paying three times more than other guys are paying for missing games? That doesn’t seem to be right.”

Spicy Hours have been going nonstop since last night’s fight between the Lakers and Rockets. For their involvement in the brawl that took place at Staples Center, Brandon Ingram, Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul have all been suspended for multiple games.

The fight started when Ingram shoved James Harden in the fourth quarter. The game had been very physical but the Lakers forward escalated everything.

Then Rondo and Paul got to throwing punches.

Paul graciously shared #ThemHands with the Lakers point guard because Rondo spit in his face.

Nets 112 (1-2), Pacers 132 (2-1)

Indiana took a 10-point lead heading into the fourth and quickly expanded it to nearly 30. Victor Oladipo had 25 points, 7 boards and 4 steals.

Raptors 117 (3-0), Wizards 113 (0-2)

With Kawhi Leonard (rest) out, Kyle Lowry stepped up and carried Toronto to victory. K-Low finished with 28 points (13 in the fourth) and 12 dimes.

Fred VanVleet dealt the critical blow by sinking an off-balance deuce with just under 14 seconds remaining.

Celtics 103 (2-1), Knicks 101 (1-2)

Once again, the Celtics went to their 20-year-old star Jayson Tatum to get them a bucket when the game was on the line. Once again, he delivered.

The SLAM 218 cover subject drained a fadeaway over Tim Hardaway Jr’s outstretched arm to give Boston the lead with 21 seconds left. He finished with 24 and 14 at Madison Square Garden.

He’s built for the big time.

Magic 115 (1-2), Sixers 116 (2-1)

Orlando got off to a hot start, and then Philly decided to pull Ben Simmons out of the game because of “back tightness.”

But thanks to JJ Redick’s 8 threes (the last of which was the game-winner) and Joel Embiid’s 32 points, the Sixers were able to outlast the Magic.

Hornets 113 (2-1), Heat 112 (1-2)

Charlotte nearly lost after building a 26-point third quarter lead, but none other than Kemba Walker kept the ship afloat.

After dropping 39 points, Walker is now averaging 35.3 points over the first three games of the season. Dude has to be Player of the Week in the East, right?

Pistons 118 (2-0), Bulls 116 (0-2)

In another game that went down to the wire, Zach LaVine had a chance to win the game. But he lost the ball on the last play and the Bulls never got a shot off.

Blake Griffin had 33 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit.

Wolves 136 (1-2), Mavs 140 (1-1)

In the highest scoring game of the evening, Minnesota and Dallas went neck-and-neck during the second half with very little defense.

DeAndre Jordan was his usual self with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Dennis Smith Jr (19 points, 6 dimes) came up with the super-clutch and one with just 6 seconds remaining.

Suns 91 (1-1), Nuggets 119 (2-0)

Only two players have recorded a triple-double without missing a shot: Wilt Chamberlain and Nikola Jokic.

Jokic scored 35 points on just 11 shots and get this: He didn’t commit a turnover while playing just under 31 minutes. Unreal.

Spurs 108 (1-1), Blazers 121 (2-0)

Damian Lillard quietly turned in yet another gem in this one: 29 points (on 15 shots), 9 assists with 0 turnovers and 0 fouls.

CJ McCollum added 24 points (on 15 shots) and crossed up Bryn Forbes into oblivion.

Rockets 124 (1-1), Lakers 115 (0-2)

Here’s hoping you didn’t turn this game off early! Staples Center erupted in a brawl late in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Ingram shoved James Harden in the back after Ingram was called for a shooting foul. Then longtime foes, Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo, went at it—shoving and throwing blows at each other.

As #ThemHands were being thrown, Ingram ran back to the fray to add a couple punches to the mix. He connected on a punch to Paul before the players were separated.

All three were ejected from the game and will be facing fines and suspensions in the days to come!

Rajon Rondo wants to make his championship mark with both the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

Rondo, 32, inked a one-year deal with the Lakers this summer, and says he needs “another ring.”

The veteran point guard believes the Purple and Gold “got some dogs” to compete for a title.

Per ESPN:

“I need another ring,” Rondo said after practice on Monday. “It’s simple. I want to be the first to win for the two most historic franchises that’s ever put a basketball to use. So, I got one in Boston and I’d love to get one with this organization.”

As for whether Rondo can accomplish his goal of winning a ring with both iconic franchises, the point guard likes what he has seen from this Lakers roster so far.

“I love what I’ve seen,” he said. “We got some dogs. We got a lot of dogs. And we got a lot of young, great talent, and we got the best player in the world. We got some good chemistry, a good mix, and we got to find a way to put it together.

“I love our young guys, our commitment, the way they study the game, their willingness to learn. I was telling [LeBron James] the other day, we were on the plane and I’ve never seen damn near 12 guys watching film. As a team, I haven’t seen that many guys combined in the last four [or] five seasons, I think. So, it was very refreshing to see. Understanding that this team is committed.”

LeBron James says the Los Angeles Lakers “would be stupid” not to be a running team this season.

The Purple and Gold will push the pace, but with an aim to remain under control.

James, 33, says he’s up for the challenge of leading the break in L.A. “even with the miles” on his odometer.

Per Yahoo Sports:

“You see those young legs out there,” James told Yahoo Sports. “We would be stupid not to utilize that as a strength. That’s just good coaching.”

[Luke] Walton is now asking James not only to stay with the herd — which will eventually include Lonzo Ball, 20, who is recovering from a knee injury — but on most occasions to be in front of it.

“I feel good out there. I’m good. I haven’t had issues [with my back since 2014-15],” James said. “I’m just trying to get everyone involved right now and make sure everyone is on the same page. That’s all. We’ll be in good shape.”

Rajon Rondo didn’t know what to expect when he joined forces with LeBron James in L.A. this summer.

Bron’s leadership turned out to be a pleasant surprise for his former nemesis.

“I played against him for 13 years now, but obviously I think what your hear versus what you see is a little bit different,” Rondo said following the Lakers’ preseason-opening loss Sunday to the Denver Nuggets.

“He isn’t who I thought he was, he’s probably even a better leader, especially on the floor, telling everybody where to go and directing traffic. I’m so used to doing that myself, so it’s kind of refreshing to me to not have to talk every possession down the floor because I have someone else doing the same thing that you can obviously trust.”

James’ other Laker teammates are also getting acclimated to his style of play.

Per the OC Register:

“There’s no way to have a timeline,” [Luke] Walton said. “Some players will already figure it out.”

Many younger Lakers have played down the “awe factor” of playing with James and the other veterans, saying each player has their role. And yet sometimes the veil still drops.

“Some of the passes that ’Do and Bron do, sometimes you just watch them like, ‘How are they human? How do they see that? How do they get the ball there?’” second-year guard Josh Hart said. “So definitely an adjustment playing with guys like that who will find you even when you don’t think you’re open.”

So far, there hasn’t been any nitpicking about how those passes arrive. When asked if teammates have taken time to find where he likes the ball, [JaVale] McGee replied: “It’s not gonna be hard with LeBron and Rondo.”

JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson, Rajon Rondo and Michael Beasley are now officially “The Meme Team.”

In a re-assurance to Laker Nation, McGee proposes that “all memes aren’t bad.”

The big fella promises the L.A. faithful a show this season.

Per ESPN:

Pop quiz: What happens when you put Lance Stephenson, Rajon Rondo, Michael Beasley and JaVale on a roster?

McGee: “The Meme Team.”

I’d binge-watch a reality show of that locker room.

McGee: “I would too. It’s definitely gonna be hilarious. But all memes aren’t bad. There are some positive memes out there.”

This roster was designed in part as an answer to Golden State. They wanted guys who can create around LeBron [James] and get under players’ skin. You know the Dubs. Will that help?

McGee: “Definitely. If you look at all the guys we signed, they don’t care about anything other than getting wins. It’s definitely gonna be a show, but these guys are workers, grinders, and there’s gonna be some real fire lit under our asses out there.”

Magic Johnson reports that LeBron James is “already in midseason form,” having watched the new-look Los Angeles Lakers scrimmage in the offseason.

Johnson was blown away by the experience of observing King James from up-close.

Johnson and GM Rob Pelinka believe the Purple and Gold have one of the NBA’s deepest rosters heading into the 2018-19 campaign.

Per the AP:

“Just to see all of them together playing a pickup game, oh my goodness,” Johnson said. “It’s something to watch. I’ve watched LeBron from afar. I’ve been at many of his games. But to watch him in the gym is a whole different thing. How much he makes everybody better, but also how he raises everybody’s level of play. His basketball IQ and his leadership ability, it’s all on display.”

And as if he needed any reminder, Johnson has witnessed the singular skills of the 33-year-old James, who agreed to a four-year, $154 million free-agent deal.

“LeBron comes in, and he’s already in midseason form and shooting fadeaways and 3-pointers from almost half-court,” Johnson said with a broad grin. “And you’re sitting there saying, ‘Man, thank God we signed him.'”

Per NBC Sports Boston:

“I think his response or his way of handling it was, this is when he wanted to bring me off the bench.”

There’s no question that the Boston Celtics’ core unit of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo was a formidable quartet on the court — the group won 66 games and an NBA Finals in its first year together after Boston stumbled to just 24 wins the season before. The group’s streak of five straight Atlantic Division titles came to an end after Allen took his talents to South Beach to join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to create the NBA’s hottest “core four” unit.

The decision to leave Boston created a rift between Allen and his former teammates, many of whom don’t speak to Allen to this day. Former Celtics coach Doc Rivers told The Athletic’s Jay King he wished there was more he could do to mend the relationship:

Allen, the current all-time leader in 3-pointers made, told The Athletic’s Shams Charania that he doesn’t expect to receive any congratulatory messages from his former Celtics teammates when he’s inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday.

Michael Beasley is a big Lonzo Ball fan, and can’t quite understand why he faced so much criticism during his rookie year.

Beasley says his new teammate is certainly no bust.

Beasley, 29, is excited to join the Los Angeles Lakers and thinks the roster will mesh nicely next season.

Per Bleacher Report:

How much Lonzo Ball tape have you watched? What do you think of his game?

Beasley: “I’m a big Lonzo fan. I don’t understand how Lonzo gets so much criticism, averaging almost 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, a steal and a block per game. Granted, his percentages were low, but you all think Russell Westbrook can shoot, and he’s got the same three-point percentage. (Ed: Lonzo’s was a tick higher last year.) Two years ago, Malcolm Brogdon won Rookie of the Year with 10 points and three rebounds a game, but now Lonzo is 11-7-7 and he’s a bust? I’m a Lonzo fan. I think if you just let him play and not worry about if he can shoot or not, I think you will see a player that knows how and wants to play a complete game of basketball. Same thing with Kyle Kuzma. I liked him in college but didn’t know how skilled he was until I played against him in the NBA. Josh Hart, same thing.”

LeBron James rejects the suggestion that he’s joining a rebuilding team in Los Angeles.

James says the last years of his prime aren’t here yet, and that critics are underestimating what the Lakers can accomplish next season.

The 33-year-old adds that he’s looking forward to leading the Lakers’ new-look roster, and hasn’t felt the need to press the front-office for another headliner.

Per ESPN:

“We just got guys that love to play basketball,” James told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols as part of a wide-ranging sit-down interview Monday at the opening of his I Promise School. “At the end of the day, guys that love to play ball, and that’s what they do every single day, I love that. I love that, and I think [Rob] Pelinka and Magic [Johnson] love that as well, and that’s why they made the signings. And bringing Lance [Stephenson] and JaVale [McGee] and [Michael Beasley] and [Rajon] Rondo, they’re guys that every day that they wake up they think about the game of basketball. And everything else is secondary.

“So we look forward to all the challenges. And, I mean, eyebrows are always going to get raised when my name is involved anyway. So it shouldn’t even be a surprise.”

Does he feel like he is sacrificing a year of his prime to play with a team full of the aforementioned signees and an untested young core, rather than staying on a squad that was more championship ready?

“I don’t even look at it like that because I don’t feel like this is going to be one of the last years of my prime,” James said. “That’s another statistic number, and I’ve always been a part of beating the odds in life. So being around my kids a lot, it gives me even more and more time in my youth.

“So I don’t feel like this is even a rebuilding year for us. We have an opportunity to do something that a lot of people don’t think we can do, and we love the notion of it’s another rebuilding year and we don’t have enough. So that will motivate the guys that we have anyways.”

The Los Angeles Lakers are charting a new course for LeBron James‘ career and style of play: he will focus more on setting up in the post, and gradually relinquish some of the playmaking he grew accustomed to in Cleveland.

James reportedly has designs on following the same path taken by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as their games evolved.

LeBron is also said to be onboard with Magic Johnson‘s unconventional vision for the roster, one that includes Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo.

Per ESPN:

Playing more like Bryant and Jordan will take time and patience, and James told Johnson that some habits will be hard to break, sources said. But James knows playing more inside and yielding some control of the ball is important as he ages and his athleticism starts to fade. At 6-foot-8, 260 pounds with great vision and passing skills, he may be better equipped for success than the smaller Jordan and Bryant.

According to multiple sources within the Lakers and close to James, this is the rollout of a plan Johnson outlined for James the night of June 30 at James’ home. The subsequent deals, which sources say James has consulted on but have been executed at Johnson and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s direction, follow this vision.

“Unlike most free agents changing teams, LeBron is arriving with the Lakers as an all-time great,” a source close to James said. “He doesn’t have pressure to prove anything. He wants some changes, and he can afford to let the process breathe.”

Afterwards, Green expressed his respect for the veteran Rondo, calling him a “champion” and “one of the masterminds” of the NBA:

I got much respect for Rondo, man. That guy has been great for a lot of years in this League. He’s a champion. I think one of the masterminds of this League…I don’t think there’s very many guys that are super smart in this League, and he’s definitely one of them.

Green averaged a triple-double in five games against New Orleans (14.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 10 assists), while the 32-year-old Rondo also put up some impressive numbers (9.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 11.4 assists).

Rajon Rondo ain’t backing down from anyone.

During Game 3 of Pelicans-Warriors on Friday night, the competitive point guard got into it again with forward Draymond Green:

Afterwards, Rondo told reporters that Dray “talks a lot of shh” and that it’s “natural” for him to respond:

New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry had this to say about Rajon, via ESPN:

“He’s as hard-headed as they are. I don’t think you’re ever going to see him back down from anyone. He’s an unbelievable competitor, he’s a great team guy, he’s going to stick up for his teammates. He’s just one of those guys — he’s not going to back down from anyone. I understand that, I just tell him he’s got to know when to let it go, though, because obviously it would be a huge loss if we would lose him in a situation like that.”

Rondo dished out 21 assists in the Pels’ 119-100 victory at the Smoothie King Center.

The series flipped back to The Big Easy and the hometown Pelicans didn’t disappoint. New Orleans rolled out to a nine-point first quarter lead and didn’t look back as Rajon Rondo recorded the first 20-assist playoff game since 2011 with 21 assists, four points and 10 rebounds.

Anthony Davis got off to a slow start, but bounced back to keep the Warriors at bay with 33 points, 18 boards, three assists and four steals. Ian Clark scored 18 points in 22 minutes against his former club to lead the Pelicans’ bench unit.

Draymond Green and Rondo continued to get chippy with each other, but Green insisted after the game that he’s not the instigator this time around.

Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 26 points.

Rockets 113, Jazz 92 (HOU leads 2-1)

Joe Ingles hit a 3-pointer from the logo to open the night, but the Rockets made it clear that game two’s outburst wasn’t going to happen again by responding with a 37-13 first quarter run. Houston put the clamps on Ingles and rookie phenom Donovan Mitchell as the duo combined to shoot just 6-for-26 from the field.

James Harden and Eric Gordon each led the Rockets with 25 points apiece.

Things didn’t get much better for the Jazz after the first quarter as the deficit stretched to 30 by the halftime intermission.

Cavaliers 113, Raptors 112 (Cavaliers lead 1-0) — OT

Man, what a game. The Raptors looked like they were going to run away with Game 1 in front of their home crowd before a 38-point second quarter for the Cavs made this a close one at the half. Toronto threatened to break away in both the third and fourth quarters, taking double-digit leads on multiple occasions only to have Cleveland fight right back.

As regulation wound down, the Cavs made their big push. Down 92-82 after a Delon Wright three early in the final frame, it was the non-LeBron Cavs — like Kevin Love (7 points, 13 rebounds), J.R. Smith (20 points on 5 threes) and Tristan Thompson (14 points, 12 rebounds) — that stepped up to bring Cleveland within striking distance. Then LeBron (26 points on 12-of-30 shooting, 11 rebounds, 13 assists) started to get going himself, and tied it up at 105 with 30 seconds left with one of his patented fadeaways.

Still the Raptors had a chance to win it before going to overtime. After Fred VanVleet’s three clanged off the rim, Toronto missed multiple putbacks that would have likely given them a Game 1 W. LeBron also had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed. Instead, it went on to overtime where the Cavs took an early lead on a Kyle Korver (19 points on 5 threes) triple and never looked back.

Down 113-112 with the shot clock off, though, the Raptors had another opportunity for the win. However, DeMar DeRozan (22 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) passed it out to VanVleet who missed once again from deep. Thompson grabbed the game-clinching rebound and the Air Canada Centre crowd — and the Raptors — were left stunned and without homecourt advantage.

Warriors 121, Pelicans 116 (Warriors lead 2-0)

With Playoff Rondo (22 points, 7 rebounds, 12 assists, 5 steals) in full force and strong play from Anthony Davis (25 points, 15 rebounds) and Jrue Holiday (24 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists), the Pelicans had a real chance to swing momentum in their favor by stealing a game in Oakland. But, with Steph Curry (28 points in 27 minutes) making his long-awaited return and Kevin Durant (29 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists) knocking down shot after shot down the stretch, it just wasn’t meant to be.

A sloppy, back-and-forth first quarter ended with New Orleans taking a small lead which disappeared by halftime when Klay Thompson (10 points on 4-of-20 shooting) drilled an almost-impossible buzzer-beating three off the glass. The Pelicans were able to push back ahead at points yet couldn’t get any separation not only due to Steph and KD being locked in but also because Draymond Green (20 points, 9 assists, 12 rebounds) and Andre Iguodala (15 points, 8 rebounds) helped out with the scoring load.

Even with that said, the Pelicans found themselves down just 99-98 with over seven minutes to play after Rondo drilled one of his three triples on the night. But Iguodala responded with a quick bucket and the Dubs rolled off a 11-0 run that essentially put New Orleans away. The real capper was an Iggy three-point play consisting of a fastbreak dunk that bounced 20 feet over the rim before falling right through the hoop. It sent Oracle into a frenzy and made it clear that the Warriors were going to head on the road up 2-0.

Definitely a better showing for New Orleans than in Game 1 but it just wasn’t enough. This was as close to 100 percent as the Warriors have been in weeks and they were downright scary at points. The Pelicans are going to need to step it up another level going forward — especially on defense — if they’re going to have a chance. It would also help to get to the free throw line a bit more (only nine attempts on the night).

Rajon Rondo rejected the notion that he steps up his game in the postseason—transforming into “Playoff Rondo.”

In a story by the NYT‘s Marc Stein, Rondo told reporters that he’s capable of playing at a high level “when the coaches allow me to be me on the court.”

“There’s no such thing as ‘Playoff Rondo,’” Rondo insisted at the Pelicans’ practice facility this week during his first extended interview of the postseason.[…]

“I’ve done what I’ve done in the past,” Rondo said. “I let my game speak for itself. I feel like, when I get a certain amount of minutes and when the coaches allow me to be me on the court, I’m Rondo. There’s no ‘Playoff Rondo.’”

He added: “Ask any player. You’re only as good as your coach allows you to be.” […]

“I haven’t had the best public perception my entire career,” Rondo said. “But at the end of the day you can’t deny that I’m a winner. If you look at my history, I don’t think you can be a four-time All-Star just from the playoffs. I must have done something in the regular season.

“‘Playoff Rondo’, I think, is a myth. But I do love the big moments.”

Bucks 115 (43-27), Knicks 102 (28-52)

The Knicks struggled to find a consistent offensive spark as Tim Hardaway Jr. sat out with a left ankle sprain; meanwhile, the Bucks were able to overcome the absences of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Malcolm Brogdon as all five of their starters scored in double-digits.

Eric Bledsoe led the way with 22 points and 10 dimes.

Nuggets 134 (45-35), Clippers 115 (42-38)

It was essentially a playoff game for both sides, but the Clippers were never able to compete as the Nuggets knocked them out of playoff contention behind Nikola Jokic’s 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Will Barton led the way in scoring with 31 on 11-for-15 shooting from the field.

The Nuggets stayed at ninth in the Western Conference standings, but the win gave them the same record as the No. 8 Timberwolves.

Lou Williams scored 24 off the bench for Los Angeles.

Nets 124 (27-53), Bulls 96 (27-53)

The Bulls moved a full game ahead of the Knicks in the Tankathon rankings as Quincy Acy scored a career-high 21 points (with six made 3’s) for Brooklyn.

Joe Harris had 16 points and six assists with a game-high plus-minus of plus-22 while Allen Crabbe added 20 points.

Kris Dunn, Robin Lopez, Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine didn’t play for Chicago.

Thunder 108 (46-34), Rockets 102 (64-16)

Oklahoma City sparked its path towards the postseason thanks to a 70-point outing from its big three of Carmelo Anthony (22), Paul George (24) and Russell Westbrook (24).

Anthony, who had shot just 36 percent from the field over the Thunder’s previous nine contests, went 7-for-14 from the field and knocked down three 3’s.

Oklahoma City trailed by one with seven minutes to go before an 11-0 run gave it the largest lead either side held all night.

James Harden dropped 26 points and had nine assists while Chris Paul added 17 and nine.

Pelicans 126 (46-34), Warriors 120 (57-23)

Two of the NBA’s most prolific 7-foot scorers went head-to-head and they didn’t disappoint: Kevin Durant had 41 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Anthony Davis led his squad to a victory with 34 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

Rajon Rondo‘s steal with 31 seconds to go that led to an E’Twaun Moore jumper on the other end put the Pelicans up four with 23.5 seconds to go and secured the victory.

Rondo finished the night with 12 points and 17 assists. His plus-minus of plus-21 led all players.

Quinn Cook continued to ball out in Steph Curry’s place, scoring 21 on 8-for-14 shooting.

Trail Blazers 105 (48-32), Spurs 116 (46-34)

With the Pelicans and Thunder picking up wins earlier in the night, the Spurs’ matchup against the Trail Blazers became that much more important.

Rudy Gay broke the stalemate with 8:58 to go in the game and San Antonio never looked back as LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals against his former team.

Damian Lillard led the Trail Blazers with a game-high 33 points.

Western Conference Playoff Race

 1. Rockets (64-16)
 2. Warriors (57-23)
 3. Trail Blazers (48-32)
 4. Jazz (46-33)
 5. Pelicans (46-34)
 6. Spurs (46-34)
 7. Thunder (46-34)
 8. Timberwolves (45-35)

As a guest on ESPN‘s First Take on Thursday, Ray Allen discussed his relationship with former Boston Celtics teammates and defended leaving Boston for Miami in 2012.

Allen claimed that the “it was clear [to him] that the [Celtics] weren’t doing what they needed to do” to bring him back, so he set his sights on other possible destinations. He went on to express shock and confusion over why his old teammates were so “salty” about his move, saying that him and Rajon Rondo haven’t talked and that Kevin Garnett forgot “the genesis” of their relationship:

Rajon Rondo dismissed the explosive allegations in Ray Allen‘s new book as mere attention-seeking from his former Celtics teammate.

Rondo says he moved on from Boston’s famed Big Three years ago, and doesn’t understand why their issues remain an object of fascination.

Rajon jokes that Allen owes him a percentage of the soon-to-be-released book’s profits.

Per the Boston Globe:

“He just wants attention,” Rondo said. “I need actually some sales from [the book], only [publicity] it’s been getting is from my name. I need some percentage or something.”

When asked about these excerpts and his decayed relationship with Allen, Rondo told the Globe he was confused as to why these stories are surfacing years later.

“Obviously, that man is hurting,” Rondo said of Allen. “I don’t know if it’s financially, I don’t know if it’s mentally. He wants to stay relevant. I am who I am. I don’t try to be something I’m not. I can’t say the same for him. He’s looking for attention. I’m a better human being than that. I take accountability for my actions. Certain [stuff] happens in my life, I man up. But he has a whole other agenda.”

Rondo said he would not mind having a conversation with Allen to air their differences and come to a resolution.

“I just want to talk to him man-to-man,” Rondo said. “I don’t have a problem with the man. I haven’t said anything. The problem is maybe he feels some type of way because the reunion trip thing came out. All I did was ask the rest of the guys. I’m the point guard, so I’m going to organize the trip. I asked the rest of my guys what y’all want to do, and they said no. What am I supposed to do?

“I’ll be the fall guy, but damn now you in the book talking about this and that. And for me as a teammate, I probably supported [Allen] more than anybody on the team, all [his stuff] that [he] had going on in Boston. I wasn’t mad that [he] went to Miami. If everybody in the league came out and wrote a book about what happens in the locker room …”

In his upcoming book “From the Outside,” Ray Allen describes the time Rajon Rondo told the Celtics, “I carried all of you to the championship in 2008.”

According to Allen, the incident occurred during a team meeting in the 2010-11 season (via Sporting News‘ Sean Deveney):

In a team meeting, Allen writes, Rondo told his teammates, “I carried all of you to the championship in 2008.”

Allen continued: “The rest of the team, almost in unison, responded, ‘You what?’”

Rondo said everyone on the team had problems with him, and when Allen told him, “None of us had issues with you,” Rondo said to him, “You did, too. You told me I was the reason we were going to be traded (in 2009 for Amar’e Stoudemire).”

When Rondo found out that Boston would be honoring the now-Lakers point guard, he famously asked, “What has he done?” and added “This is the Boston Celtics. You don’t hang [banners for] conference titles.”

That was less than a month ago.

When the two met on the court on Wednesday there was, uh, no love lost. It got a little chippy, then both were ejected as words were exchanged.

Take a look at the whole altercation:

Ray Allen penned a lengthy tribute on Instagram, honoring former teammate Paul Pierce and the NBA champion 2008 Boston Celtics.

Allen says that he will “always be a Celtic.”

What we did in 2008 was special! Not only by Boston standards but by professional sports standards. The truth is, without any one of us on that team we would’ve never been able to do the unthinkable. Going from last place in one year to winning a championship is unfathomable. But, we did it! WE did it- Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Tony Allen, P.J. Brown, Sam Cassell, Glen Davis, Eddie House, Kendrick Perkins, Scott Pollard, James Posey, Leon Powe, Gabe Pruitt, Brian Scalabrine, Doc, Danny, everyone at the Celtics Organization, our wives, children, families, the Fans in The City of Boston and yes, me. Over the last few years I have been berated, lambasted and had my name smeared. You may not want to hear this, but I will always be a Celtic. (Fact). I will always cherish the bonds that I shared with all of my teammates and the people in the city of Boston. (Truth). We all gave everything we had. We all won and we all raised the 2008 NBA Championship banner together. (Ubuntu) Paul Pierce is the first guy that welcomed Kevin and me with open arms into his atmosphere from day one and we never looked back. Paul and I have spoken about our time together as teammates- going to battle night after night knowing we could count on one another and we have also talked about my decision to leave during free agency- a choice I made for my family. Despite what you may have heard or read or what is rumored- there is nothing but love. Paul and I are more interested in building bridges than putting up walls. To Paul, number 34, Congratulations on having your number raised up to the rafters. I salute you for your commitment to the city of Boston and to us the 2008 NBA Champions #thetruth

Pelicans 128 (18-16), Nets 113 (12-22)

Rajon Rondo set a Pelicans franchise record with 25 assists, becoming the first player to hand out 25 in a game since Jason Kidd in 1996. New Orleans made 48 field goals in the game, giving Rondo a hand in more than half of the team’s baskets. And it all came in just 30 minutes. Anthony Davis had 33 points and 11 rebounds to handle the scoring load for the Pelicans and Caris Lavert had 22 for Brooklyn.

Thunder 124 (20-15), Raptors 107 (23-10)

Paul George tied the Thunder’s single-game record with seven made threes to lead OKC to a home win over Toronto. His 33 points and Russell Westbrook‘s 30 was more than enough to counter Toronto’s balanced attack. All 12 Raptors players who saw the court scored, led by CJ Miles, who had 20.

Celtics 102 (28-10), Hornets 91 (12-22)

Jayson Tatum scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics pulled away from the Hornets. Kyrie Irving led Boston with 21 points and eight assists. As for the Hornets, Kemba Walker led the way with 24, though Charlotte shot just 37 percent for the game.

Mavericks 98 (11-25), Pacers 94 (19-16)

Harrison Barnes broke a 94-94 tie on a free throw in the final minute as the Mavericks snapped an eight-game road losing streak. Barnes was one of six Dallas players in double figures, and Dirk Nowitzki led the team with 15 points. Myles Turner, Darren Collison, and Lance Stephenson all had 16 to lead the Pacers.

Bulls 92 (12-22), Knicks 87 (17-17)

Enes Kanter’s missed three-point attempt with six seconds left gave the Bulls their second-straight win and sent the Knicks to their third-straight defeat. New York shot just 4-23 from three for the game and blew a 15-point first-half lead. Kris Dunn led the Bulls with 17 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 23 for the Knicks.

Hawks 113 (9-25), Wizards 99 (19-16)

The Hawks have finally won consecutive games. Atlanta won its second in a row, out-scoring the Wizards 35-23 in the fourth quarter. Dennis Schroder scored 21 and 20 from Ersan Ilyasova to lead Atlanta. Bradley Beal had 20 for the Wizards.

Timberwolves 128 (22-13), Nuggets 125 (19-16) OT

Jamal Crawford broke a tie with 47 seconds to go in overtime to give the Timberwolves an overtime win in Minnesota. This was their fifth straight win and their eighth in their last 10 games. Jimmy Butler led all scorers with 39 points, doing his work on 10-20 shooting, while Jeff Teague had 11 points and 10 assists. Will Barton had 28 points to lead the Nuggets.

Kings 109 (12-22), Cavaliers 95 (24-11)

The Kings held the Cavs to just 15 points in the fourth quarter and won behind 24 points from Vince Carter on 10-12 shooting. LeBron James had a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists, while Kevin Love led the Cavs with 23 points.

Warriors 126 (28-7), Jazz 101 (15-21)

Golden State outscored Utah 42-22 in the third quarter and shot nearly 60 percent from the floor to win its 13th game in 14 tries. Kevin Durant had 21 points to lead the Warriors, while Rodney Hood had 26 to lead the Jazz.

Grizzlies 109 (11-24), Lakers 99 (11-22)

Tyreke Evans had 32 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Grizzlies over the Lakers in L.A. With Lonzo Ball out with a shoulder injury and Kyle Kuzma limited to just nine points on 4-24 shooting, the Lakers relied in a combined 45 points from Brandon Ingram and Jordan Clarkson.

Rajon Rondo recorded a career-high 25 assists on Wednesday, making him the first player since Jason Kidd in 1996 to hand out 25 or more in a single game.

The New Orleans Pelicans made 48 total field goals in their 128-113 win over the Nets, meaning Rondo had a hand in more than half of them in 30 minutes of action. This was Rondo’s sixth double-digit assist effort of the season in just 19 total games.

Rajon Rondo’s preseason lasted just seven minutes of gameplay. The Pelicans’ new point guard suffered a sports hernia on Friday against the Thunder that may require surgery. He’s scheduled to see a specialist in Philadelphia today and is expected to receive a concrete timetable for his return while there. The early belief, according to The New Orleans Advocate, is that he’ll be out for a month.

Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry said that his team will miss the 31-year-old’s leadership.

“Best I’ve been around in 30 years in the League as far as a guy who really takes young players under his wing and tries to teach them,” Gentry said to The Advocate. “He’s just a great leader to have on your team. If you want to have a mentor in this League, I would suggest him.”

Rondo scored 6 points and grabbed 2 rebounds in his lone preseason action. After a tumultuous time with the Bulls that resulted in him getting waived, Rondo signed with the Pels this past summer on a one-year, $3.3 million deal.

Rajon Rondo was waived; Jimmy Butler was traded; and Dwyane Wade received a buyout: for Rondo, it’s clear the Chicago Bulls aren’t interested in being competitive in 2017-18.

The veteran point guard thought he could’ve led the Bulls to the second round of the playoffs, but didn’t think the team would keep him around long thereafter.

Still, Rondo says he has no regrets about his lone, often frustrating season in the Windy City.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

“I thought they’d waive me from the jump,” Rondo said in his first remarks about leaving the Bulls. “That’s just my feeling and my intuition.”

On May 3, executive vice president John Paxson said “there’s a very good chance” the Bulls would pick up Rondo’s $13.4 million team option. On June 30, eight days after changing the franchise’s direction with the Jimmy Butler trade, the Bulls waived Rondo, whom they will pay $3 million this season.

“Especially the way the season ended, I don’t think you can say, ‘OK, now we’re going to get rid of Rondo,'” the veteran guard said. “Management figures are smart. They know what to say at particular times.

“But you traded away one of the best players in the game on draft night. So you kind of know where that situation is going. I guess it’s what happens when you decide you’re not trying to win.”

Paul Pierce is calling on Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen to “bury the hatchet.”

Pierce says their bond as Boston Celtics teammates can never be broken.

“Time to get the band back together @trayfour #burythehatchet @tic_pix @rajonrondo no matter what happen we all formed a special bond that can never b broken #onceacelticalwaysaceltic”

Allen and Pierce recently hooped together in the Super Penguin Basketball Celebrity Game held in Shanghai.

Per ESPN:

Tencent reports that Allen and Pierce had a meeting and spoke about family, Hurricane Irma and other topics.

Tencent also had a sit-down interview with Allen, during which he talked about the rift, though he never mentioned Pierce or any of his other former teammates by name.

“There is so much that goes on behind the scenes with teams,” Allen said. “The players understand it, the organization understands it. But when I left, what you know is that everybody on one side is gonna say everything they need to say to make their side look like they did everything they could to make sure that they made it correct for me. But from my opinion, I see something totally different.”

Allen later added, “I haven’t said anything negative about these guys. It’s been five or six years since I’ve been gone. Seems like it was a year or two ago. When I left, I was a free agent. It’s disheartening when you hear negative things people say about you, because when you win, you love each other, the families are close all time. When you win together, you always share that bond. That, to me, it’s never changed.”

While Rajon Rondo has a bit of an enigmatic personality, he has earned the respect of his teammates along every stop of his career.

Last season, Rondo played a major role in bringing together a divided Bulls locker room in time for a hard-fought playoff series.

Rondo infamously called out Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade in an instagram post, and ultimately earned both player’s respect.

While guesting on the Open Run Podcast, one of Rondo’s former Bulls teammates, Taj Gibson, was asked to describe Rondo with just one word.

Gibson replied with the ultimate compliment (starting at 36:51):

Describe Rajon Rondo in one word. Whatever pops into your head.

Gibson: “President. He could run for President.”

Rondo has said that he wants to coach after his playing career.

If he ever has bigger aspirations, he’ll have the support of plenty of his peers.

DeMarcus Cousins is looking forward to his first full season in NOLA, and thinks the Pelicans have a chance to be special.

Boogie has worked hard on his body this summer, and says he is in the “best shape of my life.”

Cousins believes Rajon Rondo can help take him, fellow All-Star Anthony Davis and the Pels to “another level.”

Per NBA.com:

“We’ve got an opportunity to do something special. I just wanted to take full advantage of it,” Cousins said of his focus on getting ready for next season. “Part of transforming my body was to be able to come in and fit the system and be the best DeMarcus I can be in this system. It’s been a long, hard process, but I definitely think it’s worth it. I feel great. I’m excited for this season. A lot my teammates are (also). A lot of guys are working harder than they’ve ever done in their career. I think everybody is feeling that same energy. It can be a special season.”

New Orleans’ biggest free-agent splash was the signing of point guard Rajon Rondo, a teammate of Cousins in Sacramento during the 2015-16 season. After getting an up-close view of the difference Rondo’s pass-first, savvy approach can make for a club, Cousins is thrilled to be reunited with the now 11-year NBA veteran.

“His impact on the team is going to be incredible. I think he’s going to bring out the best in everybody on our team,” Cousins said. “That’s one thing I appreciated about him on my former team. He helped me grow so much as a player, just in a single season. I think he can take (Davis) to another level, which is even scarier. Scary to think about.

“(Rondo’s) IQ, his understanding of the game, he’s a coach on the floor at all times. He takes a lot of slack off the coaches, because he’s a coach on the floor. He’ll probably know the playbook just as much as the guys that are teaching us. He’s a great addition and he’s going to really help us get to the level we want to be.”

According to Ian Begley of ESPN, those close to the New York Knicks believe the team is determined to sign a veteran point guard to mentor rookie Frank Ntilikina. There is no consensus on a possible Derrick Rose return.

Two guys the Knicks previously expressed interest in – George Hill and Darren Collison – have already been picked up; so they have set their sights on a couple of new targets, including 31-year-old Rajon Rondo.

During the 2017 playoffs, Rondo helped the No. 8 seeded Bulls jump out to a 2-0 series lead over the No. 1 seeded Celtics before suffering a thumb injury, averaging 11.5 points, 10.0 assists, and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

New York has reportedly also been in contact with the Boston Celtics about a possible Marcus Smart trade. Stay tuned for more updates.

Free agent point guard Rajon Rondo is reportedly “still in the mix” for the Lakers.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, also sat down with George Hill‘s representation and discussed a potential one-year pact.

The Lakers and Hill are said to have “significant mutual interest.”

Per ESPN:

Hill, 31, is a victim of a shrinking point guard market and could potentially parlay a healthy season with the Lakers into a longer-term deal elsewhere next summer. Hill had a problematic toe injury that limited his durability during an otherwise stellar season for the Utah Jazz. He played just 49 games, but averaged a career-high 16.9 points per game.

The Lakers are determined to do one-year contracts in free agency, preserving salary-cap space for 2018 to pursue possible free agents Paul George, LeBron James and Russell Westbrook. Before joining the Jazz in a trade last year, Hill spent five seasons as George’s teammate with the Indiana Pacers.

The Lakers have also talked with free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo about a one-year deal, including several rounds of calls to front-office officials, coaches and players who’ve worked with Rondo through the years, league sources said.

Rajon Rondo believes the Chicago Bulls would have swept the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs if he didn’t fracture his thumb in Game 2.

While on KG’s “Area 21” on Monday, Rondo spoke about the frustration of having to sit out the rest of the series after leading Chicago to a 2-0 lead. Starting at 1:44:

Barkley: How frustrating was it for you to be dominating the Celtics and then getting hurt?

Rondo: It was very frustrating. Especially with the way we were clicking at the time. We had a good chemistry going, and I think we was making some great adjustments in Games 1 and 2.

Pierce: Y’all was going to sweep.

KG: Do you think y’all was going to sweep them if you kept playing? Real talk.

Rondo: Honestly, yeah.

Later on in the segment, Rondo said he sensed that the Celtics were demoralized after losing Games 1 and 2. Starting at 5:20:

https://youtu.be/7h5aUCt7lhs?t=5m20s

KG: The Basketball Gods came back and blessed you. You come into the playoffs, and it’s a whole ‘nother season. And it’s almost like you’re the savior now.

Pierce: I thought legitimately with you, y’all would sweep the Celtics.

Rondo: And I think they knew that.

KG: Until you broke your hand, I was just like [Pierce]—

Pierce: I was like, They’re actually going to sweep the Celtics.

KG: And I was just watching you do what you do best: dissect offense, defense, calling plays, you’re praying in on weakness. You sensed that.

Back in 2008, the Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals to win their 17th title in franchise history.

Nine years later, four members of that championship squad joined Kevin Garnett on the set of Area 21 for a reunion: Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, and Glen “Big Baby” Davis.

The group discussed Game 4 of Warriors-Jazz, Pierce’s final season, retiring a Celtic, and more.

They were later surprised by their old coach, Doc Rivers, who had a retirement gift for Paul. Doc also reminisced about when Garnett beat Big Baby in an arm wrestle.

One notable player was missing from the reunion: Ray Allen. The sharpshooter, who was a member of the original “Big Three” along with KG and Pierce, left the Celtics to team up with LeBron James and the Miami Heat in July of 2012, effectively ending that era.

Rajon Rondo’s fractured right thumb makes him a “long shot” to suit up in a do-or-die Game 6 Friday night, according to Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg.

Isaiah Canaan will start in Rondo’s place for a second consecutive game.

The Boston Celtics have won three in a row, and hold a 3-2 lead in the first-round series lead.

Per the AP:

Rondo has a fractured right thumb, and coach Fred Hoiberg says the backcourt catalyst is a “long shot” to play Game 6 against the Boston Celtics on Friday night. Nor does the coach expect Rondo to be available if a Game 7 is necessary. The veteran guard [was] scheduled to work out Thursday night.

“Nothing has changed as of now,” Hoiberg said during a conference call Thursday.

Rondo was a standout at both ends in the first two games, both Chicago victories on the road. He averaged 11.5 points, 10.0 assists, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals.

“We had a real good thing going with Rajon,” Hoiberg said. “Our flow was excellent. Our pace was really good, just getting the ball down the floor early and striking before the defense was set. That’s something we had a lot of success with. Obviously, that part of our game has changed with Rondo out.”

They went on to drop Games 3 and 4 with their point guard watching from the bench.

According to The Vertical reporter Shams Charania, Rondo is “preparing to attempt” to play in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

The final decision has yet to be made, but let’s hope Rajon can get back out there.

After the game, Rondo said he was just stretching a stiff leg.

Heading home up 2-0 in their first round series against the Celtics, the Bulls just got dealt bad news as it is being reported that Rajon Rondo will be out indefinitely with a fractured right thumb.

More from the Bulls:

Rajon Rondo injured his right hand in Game 2 at Boston on Tuesday night. Rondo underwent a subsequent exam and x-rays that confirmed a thumb fracture. Surgery is not required for this injury, and he is out indefinitely.

Rondo is averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 assists over the past two games, including an 11-point, 14-assist, 9-rebound, 5-steal performance in Game 2. Game 3 is set for tonight in Chicago. The Bulls are looking to become the first No. 8 seed to take down a No. 1 seed in the First round since the 2007 Warriors.

Raptors 106, Bucks 100 (Series tied at 1)

After notching just 4 points in a Game 1 loss, Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry bounced back tonight. The All-Star had 22 and 6 assists, and knocked down the dagger jumper.

Milwaukee trailed by 12 early in the fourth quarter, but Giannis (24 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists) helped lead them back.

The score was tied at 100 before the Raps finished on a 6-0 run.

Game 3 is Thursday at the Bradley Center.

Bulls 111, Celtics 97 (Boston leads 2-0)

Statement made.

The Bulls now hold a 2-0 series lead over top-seeded Boston.

It was former Celtic Rajon Rondo who controlled the game, flirting with a triple-double: 11 points, 14 assists (Bulls playoff record), and 9 rebounds.

Isaiah Thomas struggled to get going, registering just 20 points on 6/15 from the field. Boston turned the ball over 16 times and allowed Chicago to shoot 51%.

Game 3 is Friday at the United Center.

Clippers 99, Jazz 91 (Series tied at 1)

With Rudy Gobert out, Utah struggled to contain DeAndre Jordan. The Clippers big man went for 18 points and 15 rebounds on 9/11. As a team, Los Angeles scored 60 points in the paint.

CP3 (21 points, 10 assists) and Blake Griffin (24 points) showed out as well.

The Jazz hung tough all night, but could never get over the hump.

Game 3 is Friday at Vivint Smart.

Rajon Rondo spent the first nine years of his career with the Boston Celtics, playing a key part in their 2008 title and subsequent playoff runs. Now, he’s battling against his former team in the 2017 first round as a member of the Chicago Bulls.

During Game 1 on Sunday, the point guard heard boos from the TD Garden crowd. But he wasn’t bothered by it, telling ESPN:

These fans are great. I wouldn’t expect anything else. A couple nice words were said when I walked out of the tunnel, but that’s Boston. They’ve been doing that for me for nine years while I was here so I don’t expect it [another way].

I’ve been walking the streets the last couple of days. It’s a pretty good welcoming back — [people ask] for autographs and pictures, so they have to boo me [later]. Obviously I’ve got on a red jersey, so it’s part of it.

Rondo may have the last laugh, however, as the Bulls lead 1-0 over the top-seed in the East.

Raptors 122 (42-29), Bulls 120 (33-38)

DeMar DeRozan‘s 42 points topped Jimmy Butler‘s 37, as the Raptors rallied with a late 16-0 run to claim an OT victory. Rajon Rondo had his best performance of the season, netting 24 points with eight dimes. The loss represented the latest blow to Chicago’s playoff chances, as the Bulls now sit two games behind Miami for the eighth see of the Eastern Conference.

What’s likely to generate conversation around the league, however, was Robin Lopez & Serge Ibaka‘s third quarter brawl. Each man appeared to throw punches during the altercation, which may result in fines/penalties.

Nets 98 (14-56), Pistons 96 (34-37)

In what’s been a trying season for the Nets (to put it lightly), Brook Lopez hit a game-winner at the buzzer to send the fans home happy. Lopez recorded 29 on the night, to go with 15 from Caris LeVert and 10 from 10-day signee Archie Goodwin. The Pistons are one game out of the playoff chase with Tuesday’s loss, and Stan an Gundy isn’t happy with his team’s performance.

“The team that played harder and with more energy won the game,” Van Gundy said. “Ish Smith came into the locker room and said, ‘I knew that was going in when he shot it.’ He said it coming down the hallway. I don’t know if I believe in karma. We didn’t deserve to win tonight, they did deserve to win tonight.”

Here’s Lopez’s dagger:

Heat 112 (35-36), Suns 97 (22-49)

After dropping 23 points with 14 boards, Hassan Whiteside had to depart last night’s game to get 13 stitches on his right hand. While Erik Spoelstra and the Heat are obviously concerned for Whiteside’s health, they claimed sole possession of the eighth seed thanks to 17 points from Tyler Johnson and 16 from Goran Dragic. The Suns weren’t without solid performances- Marquese Chriss scored a team-high 24 points- but Phoenix is in full-blown tank mode.

Pelicans 95 (30-41), Grizzlies 82 (40-31)

True, the Pelicans topped a struggling Grizzlies team (now 4-6 over their last 10), but the Boogie/Brow pairing certainly seems improved since their rocky start. AD dropped 19p/13r while Cousins went off for 41 points/17 boards. The Pels still have just a 2% chance of making the playoffs, per Five Thirty Eight, but a nice late season run could incentive Boogie to re-sign in NOLA.

Warriors 112 (57-14), Mavericks 87 (30-40)

What was billed as a family competition between the Curry brothers quickly turned into a rout, as Golden State outscored Dallas 63-41 between the second and third quarters. Klay Thompson led all scorers with 23 points, Stephen Curry added 17, and Ian Clark recorded 18 off the bench. Dallas’ swoon continued with Tuesday’s loss, as the Mavs have now lost by 20+ in three of their last five games.

Spurs 100 (54-16), Timberwolves 93 (28-42)

The end result was closer than the Spurs would have liked, but San Antonio has now gone 7-3 over their last 10, in prime position to clinch the second seed while resting their starters down the stretch. LaMarcus Aldridge went for a team-high 26 points, Kawhi Leonard added 22, and vets Pau Gasol and Manu Ginobili scored 11 apiece. If nothing else, Andrew Wiggins gave the Wolves a highlight by dunking all over Gasol.

Bucks 93 (35-35), Trail Blazers 90 (32-38)

Damian Lillard had a game-high 31 points (and claimed John Henson’s ankles), but Khris Middleton‘s 26 points carried Milwaukee to a much-needed win. Giannis Antetokounpo scored 22 points with eight boards while Greg Monroe had 9p/9r. The loss drops Portland to one game behind Denver for the eighth seed, while Milwaukee moved past Miami into the seventh seed.

Clippers 133 (43-29), Lakers 109 (20-51)

This one got out of hand early for the Lakers, as the Clippers entered halftime with a 70-40 lead. Chris Paul and J.J. Redick scored 27 and 24 points, respectively, while Austin Rivers scored 18 off the bench. With the W, Doc Rivers and the Clippers are up two games on OKC for the fifth seed of the Western Conference.

The 10-year anniversary of the Celtics’ 2008 championship is creeping up and the band is getting back together—sans Ray Allen.

According to a story from ESPN’s The Undefeated, Allen has been “estranged” from Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett since he left Boston for Miami in 2012. Rondo is putting together a celebration this summer at an “undisclosed foreign location” and every player from the roster got the invite, except Allen.

From The Undefeated:

“It will be a long story about that, but it is what it is,” Rondo, who plays for the Chicago Bulls, told The Undefeated. “I don’t know a good analogy to put this in. It just wasn’t the greatest separation. It wasn’t the greatest thing that could’ve happened to us as a team, a bond. We were at war with those guys [Miami]. To go with the enemy, that’s unheard-of in sports. Well, it’s not so unheard of. It’s damn near common now.

Rondo questioned Allen’s loyalty to the team and said that Ray “didn’t bleed green:”

“The mindset we had. The guys on our team. You wouldn’t do anything like that. It makes you question that series in the Finals … Who were you for? You didn’t bleed green. People think we had a messed-up relationship. It’s not the greatest. But it’s not just me. I called and reached out to a couple of other vets and asked them what they wanted to do with the situation. They told me to stick with what we got [without Allen].”

The decision to not extend an invite to Allen was not Rondo’s alone. According to Rajon he asked “a couple guys” what they think and got a “no” from each one of them:

“I asked a couple of the guys. I got a no, a no head shake,” said Rondo to The Undefeated when asked why Allen wasn’t invited.

Rajon Rondo thinks the Bulls have a shot at the Playoffs this season, but the front-office is too busy plotting the future to truly go for it.

The veteran point guard will be a free agent this summer, and says Chicago is “experimenting” instead of chasing wins.

Rondo isn’t alone in his frustration with the direction of the franchise.

Per the Boston Globe:

“It’s different, it’s part of, it’s part of life,” Rondo said of his Chicago experience. “I thought it would be different, a lot different. Now it is what it is.”

What’s unsettling about Rondo’s situation is another NBA chance may not be guaranteed. Point guards are plentiful in the league and there a slew of them in the upcoming draft. So how many teams will need a 31-year-old with a history of issues with coaches whose last three stops have been disappointing?

“My perspective on things [has changed], I would love to be part of a winning tradition or winning culture,” he said. “I thought I was going to get that here. The people up top are going in a different direction as far as experimenting. It [stinks] when you have the opportunity to make the playoffs and they want to go a different route. I’m looking for a straightforward coach. That’s what I’m looking forward to the most, sitting down with a coach. I want to develop a relationship and see what his goals are.”

After Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler ripped their teammates, Rajon Rondo came to their defense by ripping Wade and Butler, and then everyone faced reporters Friday following what surely was an ultra-awkward team meeting to say that everything is just peachy in Chicago.

Wade says he’s not taking Rondo’s criticism as a personal attack; Rondo isn’t backing down; and Butler appears to be amused by the whole thing.

General manager Gar Forman rapped everyone on the knuckles for airing the Bulls’ dirty laundry.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

“Every team has issues,” Forman said, “and it’s our strong belief that when you have issues or critical comments that you keep those issues or critical comments in house, that it is not shared through (reporters), that it is not shared through social media. […] It’s not how we want to operate. It is totally unacceptable, and we made it very clear to the players that were involved that it’s unacceptable. It’s a distraction that’s not needed. I think it’s a detriment to team growth. We have visited with the players that spoke out at length and we have dealt with that internally. We’ve also visited with our team and we’ve talked about the issue with our entire team.”

“I’m a professional,” Wade said. “I have a professional relationship with anybody who I need to and I have to. I have no problem. I’ve been a big supporter with Rondo out in the public eye with what he’s been dealing with and being taken out of the starting lineup and how he’s handled it. I have no issues, no problems with Rondo at all.”

“Dwyane is who he is,” Rondo said. “His name speaks for itself. He’s done so many great things for this league and for the teams he’s played for. Dwyane leads his way. I lead my way. The young guys got to say what they wanted to say today, and that’s the biggest thing. We spoke as a team. A lot of guys that don’t have much to say or don’t have as big a voice, everyone had the same platform this morning and we got to talk it out.”

A day after Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade ripped their teammates in front of the media, Rajon Rondo took to Instagram to stand up for his young guys.

“If anything is questionable, it’s the leadership,” Rondo says,” he said in the post.

Butler and Wade questioned their team’s desire to win, competitiveness and effort. Rondo’s had lots of trouble with the Bulls’ front office this year, but that didn’t stop him from clearly stating where he stands after Butler and Wade’s comments.

Here’s Rondo’s full post:

My vets would never go to the media. They would come to the team. My vets didn’t pick and choose when they wanted to bring it. They brought it every time they stepped in the gym whether it was practice or a game. They didn’t take days off. My vets didn’t care about their numbers. My vets played for the team. When we lost, they wouldn’t blame us. They took responsibility and got in the gym. They showed the young guys what it meant to work. Even in Boston when we had the best record in the league, if we lost a game, you could hear a pin drop on the bus. They showed us the seriousness of the game. My vets didn’t have an influence on the coaching staff. They couldn’t change the plan because it didn’t work for them. I played under one of the greatest coaches, and he held everyone accountable. It takes 1-15 to win. When you isolate everyone, you can’t win consistently. I may be a lot of things, but I’m not a bad teammate. My goal is to pass what I learned along. The young guys work. They show up. They don’t deserve blame. If anything is questionable, it’s the leadership.

Things aren’t working in Chicago, as many had predicted during the summer. The Bulls are 23-24, eighth in the East. Despite Butler making the All-Star team, Fred Hoiberg hasn’t been able to figure out how to make everything work. The trade deadline is February 23 at 3 pm EST.

The W is well-timed for Wade, who mulled his future with the organization earlier in the afternoon:

“Yeah, listen, I wouldn’t lie to you and say no. Of course,” Wade said following the morning shootaround at Amway Center. “I can’t play this game forever. I just turned 35 and I have a number in my head on how long I want to play. And at the end of the day you want to be in a situation, whether it’s a competitive situation or whatever it may be.

“It’s tough in this league, as well because a lot of it also depends on how much money you’re willing to make. It depends on what city you’re willing to be in. So it’s a lot of variables to that. But no question about it, what happens throughout this year as I go into my summer, I’ll definitely take a look at it. I take my career seriously, and where I am, where I want to be, and I will do the same thing this summer.”

The post Report: Bulls Shopping Rajon Rondo and Nikola Mirotic appeared first on SLAM.

]]>
The Bulls season got off to a promising start as the team busted out of the gate with three-straight wins. Since then, Chicago has been trending downward and currently sit at 22-23, good enough for the eighth seed in the East.

There has been plenty of drama within the locker room as well. Free agent acquisition Rajon Rondo was benched on December 31 and has played sparingly since, causing a rift between him, the coaching staff and the front office. The result could be a shake up and a report from the Chicago Sun-Times states that Gar Forman and Co. have put both Rondo and Nikola Mirotic on the trade block. Mirotic is averaging a career low 9.3 points per game and is shooting career lows in field goal, 3-point and free throw percentage.

More from the Sun-Times:

According to multiple sources, the Bulls have been shopping guard Rajon Rondo and forward Nikola Mirotic in hopes of bolstering the roster and making a second-half run in the wide-open Eastern Conference.

But one of the sources said neither player is generating the kind of return general manager Gar Forman wants.

‘‘Obviously, you knew that would be the case with Rondo,’’ the source said. ‘‘But [the Bulls] don’t like what they’re hearing back on [Mirotic], either. Then again, that’s a [front office] that tends to overvalue its assets.’

All-Star Jimmy Butler is reportedly frustrated with the way the season has gone, but “uncomfortable about getting involved in front-office issues, especially because of his loyalty to his teammates:”

Butler never has been shy about recruiting other players to the Bulls if it means building a better roster around him, but he’s uncomfortable getting involved in front-office issues, especially because of his loyalty to his teammates. Butler will help bring in new players during an offseason, but he doesn’t want to be the reason they’re packing to go by the trade deadline.

So although sources said Butler has expressed his displeasure with the roster to anyone in the front office who has asked in recent weeks, he’s not the type of guy to name names.

‘‘Jimmy’s attitude is [the front office is] paid to fix it, so fix it,’’ the source said.

Rajon Rondo isn’t the easiest guy to coach, but he wants to give the profession a try once his playing days come to an end.

Rondo, 30, has a widely-acknowledged high basketball IQ, which has led to frequent clashes with bench bosses throughout his career.

The veteran point guard says he plans on hooping in the NBA for another six-to-seven years.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

“I absolutely want to coach,” Rondo said inside a nearly empty Bulls locker room.

“I’ve been preparing to coach since I left Boston, really,” Rondo said. “I study all of my coaches. I watch the way they move, the timeouts they call, plays they draw up out of timeouts, how they run practices, speeches they give. I’m trying to follow it all. I see how players gravitate toward different coaches.

“I actually went back (to Louisville) a couple (of) days ago and saw my high school coach (Doug Bibby). He’s one of the best: his delivery, how he encourages players, the confidence he gives them, his attention to detail in timeouts. I’m taking my notes on a lot of different stuff.”

Rajon Rondo was last season’s NBA assists leader, this despite his claim that his teammates on a morbid Sacramento Kings squad were largely faceless nobodies.

Rondo hasn’t enjoyed his time in Chicago this season—he was tagged with five consecutive DNP-CDs from New Year’s Eve to Jan. 9.

There hasn’t been a whole lot of communication between the disgruntled veteran point guard and the Bulls’ front-office about his role and future with the franchise, but Rondo still believes he can play at an elite level.

Per NBA.com:

Rondo says he was told by a staffer that he wouldn’t name that the team was taking him out of the starting lineup “to save me from myself.”

And Rondo’s reaction? […] “I thought it was (bleep),” he said.

“It’s just, maybe, the personnel in this situation,” Rondo says in response. “I mean, last year — I hate to keep talking about last year — but you couldn’t name three people on my team, the Sacramento Kings, and I led the league in assists. You know? I don’t know. I believe so (that his skill set still has value), given the right personnel and the flow of the game.”

Ever since he was a DNP-CD for the entire second half of December 30’s game in Indiana, Rajon Rondo hasn’t been able to get a straight answer out of the Bulls’ coaching staff or front office about his future.

Rondo sat down for an 11-minute interview ahead of tonight’s game in Washington DC. Despite playing without Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade, Rondo still didn’t get the start, but he did return after a five-game benching.

During the mini-presser, Rondo said that this was most confusing time of his career. He said his relationship with Hoiberg is “cordial” and that they are both trying to win basketball games. He also said he’s been playing pickup games at a middle school in Maywood, Illinois.

According to KC Johnson, Rondo said he hasn’t had any communication with the front office since their meeting on December 31, when he told them that he would prefer to play somewhere else if he was going to continued to be benched.

“You’re only as good as your coaches think you are,” Rondo said. “That’s a big part of each individual’s success in the NBA.”

Rajon Rondo sat down with the powers that be in the Bulls’ front-office, but the veteran point guard’s future in Chicago remains under a very dark cloud.

Rondo, 30, says nothing about his situation was cleared up during the meeting with Bulls execs Gar Forman and John Paxson.

Rondo has been glued to the bench since the second half of a Dec. 30 loss to the Indiana Pacers :

“It went OK,” Rondo told ESPN.com. “It really wasn’t a clear-cut message [from Forman and Paxson]. We’ll talk again.”

Rondo said after a Dec. 31 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks that he would “absolutely” look to move on from the Bulls if he wasn’t playing, but when asked Wednesday if Forman and Paxson were open to helping him find another team to play for, Rondo did not get into specifics.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg has been noncommittal about using Rondo off the bench since Rondo’s demotion, repeatedly saying “we’ll see,” when the possibility is discussed. Rondo used the same terminology when asked if he would be open to coming off the bench. […] “We’ll see,” Rondo said. “We’ll see. I just want to work on my game and continue to get better.”

Update (January 1): It appears Rondo and the Bulls are going to try and make things work for now. According to a report from The Athletic, the point guard won’t lose his spot on the team “as long as he stays professional and ready to play:”

More from The Athletic:

A source with direct knowledge of the Saturday night meeting told The Athletic that Rondo wasn’t in any immediate danger of losing his spot on the team, as long as he stays professional and ready to play.

The feeling throughout the organization is that Rondo has been a positive off-court presence since signing with the Bulls in July, outside of an incident with assistant coach Jim Boylen during a Dec. 3 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Rondo was suspended for one game after that incident, missing the Dec. 5 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. At the time, Rondo’s teammates and coaches came to his defense, with Jimmy Butler calling him a “phenomenal damn teammate.”

Original Story: The Rajon Rondo experiment in Chicago may be over before it really starts. With a healthy Michael Carter-Williams back in the Bulls rotation, Rondo has been glued to the bench and picked up a DNP-Coach’s Decision in last night’s blowout loss to the Bucks.

Following the game, Rondo made it sound like his days in Chicago may be coming to an end, telling ESPN that he and GM Gar Forman “will talk” and he will “absolutely” try and find a new team if he doesn’t get minutes:

“Gar and I will talk,” Rondo said. “We’re going to talk tonight and we’ll go from there.”

Rondo acknowledged that if the Bulls continue to keep him on the bench, he will speak to management about trying to find a new team.

“Absolutely,” he said.

Rondo acknowledged that he expected things to be different playing with Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler, but head coach Fred Hoiberg told him that he would be still be able to call his own plays:

“I’m coming off a pretty good year in Sacramento,” Rondo said. “I was able to do a little bit of things differently, but obviously I knew coming in here playing with Dwyane and Jimmy would be different. That was OK with me. Fred and I talked in the beginning, said I would be able to call a lot of the plays. But the flow of the game and throughout the season, things may change. Fred and I spoke earlier, and we talked about it.”

Since being traded from Boston in the 2014-15 season, the point guard has bounced around between Dallas, Sacramento and Chicago. He is averaging 7.2 points, 7.1 assists and 6.5 rebounds for the 16-18 Bulls. Earlier this season, he was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team” after he reportedly threw a towel at an assistant coach.

The Chicago Bulls suspended Rajon Rondo for a game following a heated exchange with assistant coach Jim Boylen over the weekend.

The veteran point guard reportedly threw a towel in Boylen’s direction during Saturday’s 107-82 road loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Rondo committed five turnovers, and managed just two points and two assists against the Mavs.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Rondo had an emotional exchange with associate head coach Jim Boylen during and after Saturday’s loss to the Mavericks, according to a source. One source said Rondo threw a towel in the direction of Boylen during the game, although that couldn’t be confirmed by a second source.

Rondo quickly apologized to the coaching staff and his teammates, the source said. He met with coach Fred Hoiberg on Sunday and also attended a team function that day, a holiday party.

(Jimmy) Butler was asked if this latest incident further damaged Rondo’s reputation around the league. […] “It doesn’t,” Butler said. “I don’t feel his reputation fits him at all. Rondo’s an incredible basketball player, friend, brother to me now, to us. I think we love him here. I think the fans love him as well, the organization, I think everyone has nothing but great things to say about him. I don’t see where that reputation came from at all.”

The Chicago Bulls announced a one-game suspension Monday for point guard Rajon Rondo.

The official reason given is the always amusingly-vague “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Reportedly, there was a “heated exchange” with an assistant coach.

Rondo has suited up in 17 games this season (all starts), averaging 8.2 points, 7.2 assists and 6.7 rebounds in 30 minutes per night.

Spurs 109 (13-3), Celtics 103 (9-7)

It took the Spurs a little bit of time to wake up for this early game in Boston. The Cs led by 14 in the first quarter thanks to a slow start from the Spurs’ starters. David Lee then led a big charge from San Antonio’s bench. The second unit finished with 56 points, including 15 points and 12 rebounds from Lee. With 19 from Patty Mills and a career-high 15 from rookie Davis Bertans, they outscored the Spurs starters.

The Celtics won the assist battle and had fewer turnovers than the Spurs, but they shot only 9 free-throws, compared to 25 from the silver & black. Isaiah Thomas had 24 and 8 for Boston, Jae Crowder chipped in 18 and Avery Bradley got 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Wizards 94 (5-9), Magic 91 (6-10)

John Wall jumped on the Magic early, helping the Wizards build a 26-7 lead. He had 5 dimes and 3 steals midway through the first. But Orlando slowly climbed back into the game by keeping the Wizards out of the lane after that big first quarter. Washington had just 10 free-throw attempts.

In the end, Wall proved too much for Orlando. He scored the final 8 points for the Wizards. The Magic had 19 turnovers and 18 assists. Serge Ibaka had 19 points and 4 blocks and Nik Vucevic had 17 points and 17 rebounds. Wall led the ‘Zards with 26 points and 10 helpers. All five starters scored in double-figures for Washington. Bradley Beal had a season-high 8 assists.

Cavs 128 (13-2), Mavs 90 (2-13)

The Cavs are on fire. A game after scoring 40, Kevin Love led Cleveland with 27 points and 10 rebounds. He was backed up by 25 from Kyrie Irving and 19 points and 11 assists from LeBron James. The wine & gold led by as many as 45, limiting Dallas to 8-35 from downtown and 8-12 from the foul line. The Cavs made 20 threes and every player on their roster scored. Dirk Nowitzki had 15 for Dallas.

Knicks 113 (8-7), Hornets 111 (8-7)

There were 22 lead changes and 17 ties in this one. The Knicks led early, then the Hornets took control between the second and third quarters. During the fourth, they traded body blows, eventually needing overtime to decide a winner.

Carmelo Anthony stepped up for New York, registering a season-high 35, making the game-winner with 3 seconds remaining. The Knicks have now won six in a row at the Garden and three straight overall. The Hornets get a shot at revenge when they host the Knicks on Saturday night.

Bulls 105 (10-6), Sixers 89 (4-12)

The Bulls ended their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record, capping off two weeks on the road with a wire-to-wire win against Philly. Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler both had 26. Rajon Rondo had team-highs in assists and rebounds, with 10 and 8, respectively. Without Joel Embiid (rest), the Bulls built the lead up to 28, giving their starters some much needed rest towards the end of this game.

Pistons 108 (8-9), Clippers 97 (14-3)

The Clippers suffered just their third loss of the season because of a balanced team effort from Detroit. The Pistons grinded their way to this win with 17 from Marcus Morris, 16 from Andre Drummond, Ish Smith and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, 15 from Tobias Harris and 11 from Jon Leuer. They simply outplayed LA, earning this win with pure determination. The Pistons had more rebounds, three-pointers and steals, and fewer turnovers than the Clippers.

LA grabbed an 82-80 lead thanks to a JJ Redick barrage late in the third. But there was no way Detroit was losing this game, overcoming 24 from both Redick and Griffin, and a season-best 15 assists from Chris Paul.

Jazz 95 (9-8), Hawks 68 (10-6)

The Hawks hadn’t scored fewer than 92 points all season. But Utah put the clamps on them. Atlanta also had season-lows in assists and field goals, getting only 11 dimes and 26 buckets. Dennis Schroder scored 16 for the Hawks, but needed 19 shots to do it.

Utah had their best defensive performance of the season, which is saying a lot. The Jazz currently have the second-best Defensive Rating in the League, trailing only the Hawks. The Jazz had 55 total rebounds, 9 blocks and 9 steals. It marked the third time this year that they’ve gotten at least 50 rebounds. They’ve won all three of those games.

Rudy Gobert had 5 rejections and Shelvin Mack had 4 takeaways. Gordon Hayward led the Jazz in scoring with 24, while George Hill had 23.

Raptors 105 (10-6), Bucks 99 (6-8)

Somebody gotta stop DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry in the clutch. DeRozan hit a downhill midrange jumpers with two defenders in his face, Lowry drilled a 27-footer with 1:06 left, then he got a steal to put the dagger in Milwaukee. The duo combined for 45 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. They scored Toronto’s final 13 points.

Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 29 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds on 12-17 shooting. But that monster performance will go unnoticed because of how lethal DeRozan and Lowry were. DeRozan led Toronto in rebounding and Lowry led them in assists.

Heat 90 (5-10), Grizzlies 81 (10-6)

The Grizzlies inexplicably brought Mike Conley off the bench tonight in their loss to the Heat, citing minutes-management as the reason. Conley still led the team in scoring, but didn’t get any help. JaMychal Green was the only other member of the Grizz to score in double-figures. Without Zach Randolph (indefinite leave of absence to mourn the passing of his mother), Memphis didn’t have the firepower.

Tyler Johnson had 22 for Miami. Four other Heat players scored at least 10 points and Miami led for the whole game.

Pacers 118 (8-9), Nets 97 (4-11)

The Pacers are dealing with some major injury problems at the moment. Paul George sat out yet another game, and will miss the next three because of injuries to his left ankle and back. CJ Miles’ return is uncertain and Kevin Seraphin will also miss at least the next three games to rehab his sore knee. With three rotation players out, the Pacers used their depth to rout the Nets.

Glenn Robinson III made the most out of his second appearance in the starting lineup, dropping 20 points. Al Jefferson and Rodney Stuckey combined for 34 of Indiana’s 48 bench points. Myles Turner, Monta Ellis and Thad Young all scored at least 11 points.

After a close first quarter, the Pacers blew the game open and were up by as many as 31. Jeremy Lin hasn’t played since November 2 and his absence has really made a difference for the Nets, who have now lost six in a row.

Thunder 132 (9-8), Nuggets 129 (6-10)

Russell Westbrook put up yet another triple-double tonight, going for 36 points, 12 rebounds and an NBA season-high 18 assists. It’s his sixth of the season and 43rd of his career. He’s now sitting with season averages of 32 points, 10.9 assists and 9.8 rebounds. Yeah.

OKC had trouble putting the Nuggets away. Behind Wilson Chandler’s 32 points and a no-fear performance from 19-year-old Jamal Murray (20 points), Denver was able to keep Westbrook under wraps for three quarters. Even when Russ scored 24 points in the fourth and OT, the Nuggets were still right there, narrowly missing out on this win.

Wolves 98 (5-10), Suns 85 (5-12)

Zach LaVine had one of the best dunks of the season and the young Timberwolves were able to outlast the Suns for an impressive road victory, just their second win away from Target Center this season. Andrew Wiggins broke out of his three-game shooting slump to lead Minnesota with 25 points. Along with 22 from Karl-Anthony Towns, the Wolves pulled off a 23-point turnaround in the fourth quarter. The Wolves also got good minutes from Tyus Jones. The Suns committed a season-high 26 turnovers and scored only 10 points in the fourth.

Blazers 119 (9-9), Pelicans 104 (6-11)

This wasn’t an easy win for the Blazers. Anthony Davis and the Pelicans hung tough till late in the fourth, trailing 105-101. Then the Blazers responded with a quick 8-0 burst to seal the game. Davis went for 31 and 13. Jrue Holiday had 16 points off the bench. Langston Galloway and Terrence Jones helped New Orleans stick around, making timely buckets and key defensive stops.

Damian Lillard went off late in the third, pushing the Portland lead to 94-78. He finished with 27 points and 11 helpers. CJ McCollum had 24, Mason Plumlee had 12 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists, Mo Harkless had 19 points and 11 boards. Portland outrebounded New Orleans 52-34.

Warriors 109 (14-2), Lakers 85 (8-9)

No Nick Young, Julius Randle or D’Angelo Russell meant for trouble for the Lakers tonight. They played hard but Golden Sate’s on a roll. The Dubs last loss was on November 4, to the Lakers. They’ve seemingly figured out how to play together since then. Tonight, they had 31 assists on 43 field goals, getting 29 from Kevin Durant, 24 from Stephen Curry and 18 from Klay Thompson. That trio combined for 8 of GSW’s 11 triples on the night. Durant also chipped in a season-high 9 assists and 6 rebounds.

Jordan Clarkson had 20 for the Lakers. Luke Walton got great minutes of out Tariq Black and Thomas Robinson. They combined for just 14 points and 15 rebounds, but they infused LA with much needed energy and a willingness to compete.

Rockets 117 (10-6), Kings 104 (6-10)

The Rockets set a single-game NBA record with their 50 attempted three-pointers tonight. They made 21, paced by Trevor Ariza, who hit 6-11. Of the 10 Rockets that played, only Nene, Clint Capela and Montrezl Harrell didn’t make or attempt a three-ball. Everyone else hit at least one.

James Harden picked up his fourth triple-double of the season, getting 23, 10 and 10. He was one of seven Rockets to score in double-figures. Houston had 27 dimes on 40 baskets.

They held Sacramento to 9-32 shooting from outside. And though DeMarcus Cousins had 32, no other King had more than 12. Cousins made a career-best 5 three-pointers, but that couldn’t overcome the Rockets’ lead of as many as 29.

Ray Allen officially announced his retirement earlier today, and it was a big deal, but apparently not to Rajon Rondo.

Rondo, who won an NBA title with the sharpshooter when both guys were members of the Boston Celtics in 2008, (quite understandably) thought Allen had already retired from the game (the future Hall of Famer hasn’t played since 2014.)

Dwyane Wade was also asked for his reaction to the news, and spoke eloquently about his former Miami Heat teammate.

Dwyane Wade sealed the deal for the Bulls in a dramatic 105-99 win Thursday night, and says helping lead Chicago to a victory in his official homecoming closed a chapter of his previous life in Miami.

The former Heat superstar wishes his old team well, but says he’s focused on elevating his hometown squad.

“I closed the Miami chapter right there,” Wade told The Vertical inside an empty locker room late Thursday.

“I can’t focus over there anymore. I want those guys in Miami to be successful, but I’m motivated by greatness here. I’m motivated by doing what people think I can’t do, for sure. I had to make a decision, and I feel good about the decision I made.

“A lot of emotions hit me when I made that shot. I’m not here because I’m angry at [Pat Riley] or the Heat. There’s no anger. I’m happy because I got the freedom to look elsewhere. I got to look at home.”

The post In My Mind appeared first on SLAM.

“I can’t turn it off.”

Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo’s engine is always running hot. His brain is always racing, processing, assessing. He’s accepted that it’s a gift and a curse.

“It’s hard to turn it off—everything you gotta deal with,” he says. “I’m just wired that way. I can’t not be ahead of the curve.”

Rondo is the curve. Think Rosie Perez in White Men Can’t Jump, rattling off more foods that start with the letter Q than any other human knew existed. Rondo’s mind holds more than the minds of his peers, his mind reasons quicker than the minds of his superiors. And thus, he’s perceived as an NBA enigma.

The straight-A student who doesn’t get straight As because he’s sleeping in class, bored out of his mind of the monotony, so craving a challenge that he becomes one himself. That was Rondo. In high school, he used to look so unenthused with advanced math that his teacher actually thought he was cheating.

“I was looking at his tests and these long, drawn-out problems that only me and people in my department can do with no work. I said, Yo, he’s cheating off somebody,” Doug Bibby recalls.

So next time around, Bibby gave Rondo a different test than the 29 other students in his class. The result was the same.

“Dude gave me the test back, no work with just answers. And guess what? Every problem was right. The kid is just brilliant.”

Bibby, first cousin of former NBA player Mike Bibby, was also Rondo’s basketball coach at Louisville Eastern High in Kentucky. The two clashed, but Bibby eventually became Rondo’s biggest advocate and mentor—his big brother, so to speak.

“He became my assistant coach. We were similar. From the classroom to the basketball court [to] the perspective he looked at the game. I saw that at an early age,” Bibby says. “You have to let him be himself.”

Muzzled and suppressed after being traded to Dallas, then hidden among the constant instability in Sacramento, Rondo knows he’s been somewhat forgotten by the general public. He seems more amused than bemused by it.

“I set individual goals that I accomplished last year and I was in Sacramento,” Rondo says. “If I was on TV and I was in the East, I’m pretty sure leading the League in assists wouldn’t be swept under the rug so much.”

Only the drama gets mentioned when talking about the Kings, and it can affect even the most decorated of guys.

“I wouldn’t say it was chaos, but the media portrayed it as chaos,” Rondo says. “We had ups and downs, we went through certain situations. Publicly talking about firing our coach, didn’t fire our coach. It was a lot of distractions versus what we were able to do as a team.”

The list of players who’ve led the League in assists at least three times in this millennium all have tickets punched for the Hall: Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Chris Paul.

And Rondo.

Three years ago, you couldn’t have a conversation about the best point guards in the NBA and not have Rondo’s name on the tip of your tongue. There was no better big-game player at his position, no more feared competitor in a winner-take-all environment. Then, only Paul’s mastery could touch Rondo’s wizardry.

In 2016, how far do you have to go before mentioning Rondo?

His answer says little but speaks volumes: “I’m not fueled by that. I just want to be the best.”

Rondo’s physical gifts are undeniable. His long arms can leave those foolish enough to try grasping for air—like the video of Rondo toying with Trey Burke. But the narrative on Rondo changed from being the “difficult but worth it” type to “problem child” seemingly overnight, and he’s self-aware enough to know exactly where it comes from. Even if you stumble through your words trying to find the right way to phrase the question about his reputation, Rondo sees mercy and helps you out.

“We can say it: Rick Carlisle,” he says bluntly. “It was a learning process in itself.”

It didn’t take being traded from Boston to Dallas for Rondo to appreciate a coach not being threatened by him, but it certainly highlighted the fact that he needs freedom, and that genius is not always embraced.

“Rick ran things differently,” Rondo says. In Boston, “I could call a play on one side of the floor and flip it on the opposite side to confuse the defense. In the beginning [in Dallas] I just had to bite my tongue with how things were run because they won there and I won [before].

The incident that everybody blew up, Rick and I were on different pages on that particular day.”

The two had disagreements in the Playoffs a couple years back, a situation both parties should find regrettable. But the reputation has followed only Rondo. Has it affected him negatively?

“Absolutely.”

The new point guard for the Chicago Bulls looks around at his surroundings, his third team in three years, hoping he’s found a place that will accept his genius the way he himself has learned to over the years—with patience, not frustration.

“Doc [Rivers] would tell me not to get bored with the process. Things would be monotonous going over the same thing over and over again,” he says. “At times I got frustrated early in my career but over time I grew to understand everybody has their own learning curve and everybody learns differently.”

Wide-eyed rookie Denzel Valentine marvels when Rondo tells him he can’t watch basketball just for the sake of entertainment value, as his mind won’t stop him from scouting and taking notes of opposing players’ tendencies, even if they’re not on the upcoming schedule.

It takes time to understand the brilliance of Rondo. If the Bulls exceed the .500 ball most analysts see for them in 2016-17, it’ll be because Rondo manipulates seemingly ill-fitting chess pieces to his advantage. It’ll be because Rondo figures out a way to make the grouping of himself, Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade (aka the “Three Alphas”) mask some roster ills and coaching inexperience.

“I was able to quarterback with so many future Hall of Famers. I learned how to keep guys happy,” Rondo says, referring to his days in Boston. “I had to laugh about it—myself, Jimmy and D-Wade ‘not getting along.’ I’ve seen it first-hand with the Big Three. Three guys with different backgrounds and they were able to come together.”

He kept Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen lathered by counting touches and shots in his head, and he’ll have to do that with Wade and Butler to ensure things work as harmonious as possible.

Before signing with the Bulls, Rondo watched film with Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg for hours on end, the two bonding over Rondo’s intellect, chemistry developing over Rondo’s immediate grasp of a complicated offense.

“A lot of things were said about Fred, a lot of things were said about me,” Rondo says. “It’s definitely been refreshing to come in a situation and not be judged. You get a great fresh start.”

Listening to Rondo rattle off the names of former teammates like Boogie Cousins and Monta Ellis, it’s clear he gravitates to players whose passion can be misunderstood, whose intentions can be misinterpreted.

“It’s how the perception is. You can’t judge a guy, seeing him 82 games,” Rondo says, perhaps transitioning from describing them to describing himself. “He might be fiery some games and he’s not a yes man [who does] everything he’s told to do and not know what’s going on. Explain it to me, let me understand why we’re doing certain situations. I’m not going out there and doing it for no reason. It has to make sense.”

And of his new star teammate Butler, Rondo says, “I wanted to play with guys who competed, and Jimmy was at the top of the list. Jimmy’s not afraid to punch a guy in the mouth, figuratively speaking.”

Rondo walks through the United Center after a morning shootaround, hoping to get some extra shots up in his new home. But a curtain blocks off the court. He turns and asks, “They’re supposed to be gone by now, right?”

Inside, a fellow genius is at work, a man who was gifted and cursed in the same way as Rondo. Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd has his team’s shootaround running a little longer than expected.

The two men later nod and exchange pleasantries as members of an exclusive kind of brotherhood.

“It can be hard—you’re a competitor and you’re trying to win,” Kidd says a few moments after, looking in Rondo’s direction. “When you can think multiple steps ahead, sometimes that scares people. I think he has a gift and he uses it well. That’s why he’s one of the best at what he does.”

Rondo’s clairvoyance is on display a few hours later in his first preseason game in a Bulls uniform. His dart-like passes often escape the fingertips of his teammates or, in some cases, miss the mark altogether. He isn’t dishing to where his teammates are or where they’re going—he’s throwing passes to where they should be, where they better be, and where, in time, they will be. He’s reprogramming them from past habits, one pass in the face at a time.

His voice cuts through a building filled with nearly 20,000 people just as it does in one with 30. He’s the man who stops Bulls practice because “too many people are talking who shouldn’t be”—a player who knows that while the Bulls were too quiet last season, it doesn’t mean he’ll allow it to be a free-for-all just because. “I feel like everything in life happens for a reason. Me being here now with those two guys, with all these young guys, which I was [once], that’s how life works.”

Kidd, who overcame the nickname “Ason Kidd” (no J…) by sinking the fifth most three-pointers in NBA history, knows a little about dealing with a reputation and believes public perception of Rondo should change immediately.

“We label everybody and labels tend to not be easily erased,” Kidd says. “The perception of ‘can’t shoot’ can follow you, ‘not coachable’ follows you. It’s the unfortunate thing. I think Rondo is one of the best at what he does. What always comes up: Is he coachable? He’s a basketball player and does what he does at a high level. He’s a champion. It shouldn’t be a question.”

Until then, Rondo will be listing off those foods that begin with the letter Q, because the mind of a genius doesn’t have an off switch.

“Quail, Quince, Quiche…”

Bulls fans got their first look at newcomers Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo in Chicago’s 93-91 preseason loss Monday night to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Wade says there’s reason for excitement in the Windy City, since no one quite knows what to make of this squad.

Rondo finished with 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 turnovers in 24 minutes.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Like most everything else with these new-look Bulls, Wade without “Heat” on his jersey will take some getting used to. […] “I put that book away. Next time I open that book will be Nov. 10,” Wade said, alluding to the Bulls’ first trip to Miami. “Right now, my job is to focus on being my best Dwyane Wade here in Chicago at the tender age of 34, bringing something to this team, organization and city. And it’s no pressure on me because my expectation of myself will always be higher than outside expectations.”

Even Wade admitted expectations for this team — with so many new faces — are anybody’s guess. […] “The unknown is exciting,” he said. “A lot of people are waiting to see good or bad what this team is going to do.”

Wade and (Jimmy) Butler, who was introduced last of the starters, didn’t play in the second half. […] “I’ve been in the league 14 years,” Wade said. “This is a straight marathon for me. I’ve talked to Coach about playing a few minutes and kind of revving up as we go on. … Everything for me is different surroundings. But it’s still basketball. Nothing has changed from that standpoint.”

Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo are excited to team up in Chicago—Wade considers Rondo the best floor general he’s ever played with.

The veteran shooting guard isn’t worried about adjusting to the Bulls’ style of play.

Head coach Fred Hoiberg is encouraging Wade to fire away from three-point range.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

“My game translates anywhere,” Wade said.

What may surprise, given his career 3-point shooting percentage of 28.4, is that coach Fred Hoiberg is emphasizing for Wade to pull the trigger on open shots beyond the arc. […] “That’s a little new for me,” Wade said.

Wade did shoot 52.2 percent on 3-pointers during last season’s playoffs when defenses stacked to try to take away his driving and slashing game. And his career playoff 3-point percentage is a more respectable 34.2 percent. […] “A lot of people have talked about me not shooting 3s, but no one has been able to take away what I wanted to do. So why would I do something else?” Wade said. “When you take it away, I have the ability to knock it down. I’m not Doug McDermott. I’m not Niko (Mirotic). But I’m comfortable with the shot and I’m going to shoot it. I know it’s going to be there, so I have a better chance of knocking it down.”
